DOWNLOAD NO.153 - NEON PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Musician William Motzing was born in the USA. During his career as a professional trombonist Bill performed with Kai Winding Septet, Jon Eardley Quintet, Gerry Mulligan Big Band,Bill Russo Big Band, Sal Salvador Big Band, Eastman-Rochester Symphony and the Pittsburgh Symphony. His diverse career has also included being the sound designer for pop band Blood, Sweat and Tears for three years.

In the classical arena Bill has conducted major symphony orchestras including the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestras. In Australia he is well represented via film scores and television series including Mother and Son, Come in Spinner, Brides of Christ and Young Einstein.

He currently teaches theory, arranging, modern jazz history, improvisation and ensembles at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Bill continues to perform his works regularly in Sydney and inspires all musicians he comes in contact with.

Bill's biggest hit came in 1981 when he conducted a studio group called the Neon Philharmonic Orchestra and their single "Classics On 45" became a substantial hit. In foreign lands the arrangement was re-badged as "Hooked On Classics".

The 7" single as far as I know has never been on C.D. but the longer album mix has once made it to digital form. To remedy this situation, here for download is the single mix edited from the longer C.D. version, replicated exactly to match the single version (minus scratches, clicks and pops of course).

A classic track:

DOWNLOAD NO.152 - HEADBAND

Headband were a blues / rock band who were based in Adelaide and played between 1972-74. Their sole album "A Song For Tooley" sold quite well spending five weeks in the charts and making the Top 50. Prior to this they'd recorded a couple of pop singles, the first was "Land Of Supercars" which got to #13 in Adelaide. The second single "Country Lady" was a minor hit in 1973 charting in Sydney and Adelaide and was included on the album. The single was not representational of the album content which was heavier in nature.

"Country Lady" is a poppy country-tinged song and still after all these years has a jaunty feel a bit like "Mississippi" by American singer, John Phillips. The album has been on C.D. but is no longer available. The "Country Lady" single has not been included on any other compilation.

The original single was about 2 and a half minutes which is very short! This download is a 5 minute extended Tom Mix 12" remake:

DOWNLOAD NO.151 - BLACK DIAMONDS / TYMEPIECE

The Black Diamonds hailed from Lithgow NSW. One of their big early hits was "I Want, Need, Love You". Toward the end of 1967, the Black Diamonds decided to make the big move to Sydney. The Sydney shift proved to be a fruitful one.

On January 1st, 1968 the Black Diamonds became Tymepiece. In August 1968, the band appeared on two simultaneous singles. As Tymepiece, they issued "Bird In The Tree" and producer Pat Aulton also set them up to record a version of The Tokens’ old standard "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" but under the moniker of Love Machine. “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” was a national top 40 (#18) hit - and its “B” side, the eccentric “Lonely Hearts Club Christmas Club Party has become something of a cult-track - a 12" extended Tom Mix of it is available at DOWNLOAD NO.131.

This download is for the mono Tom Mix remix of the ultra rare Black Diamond's single "I Want, Need, Love You".

DOWNLOAD NO.150 - BIG RED

The ensemble Big Red, was the brainchild of studio owner and songwriter, Peter Blyton, film director, George Muskens and silent partner, former "Hush" guitarist and jingle king, Les Gock. Tim Gaze was one of the more prominent musos to be a member of Big Red, he being ex member of Tamam Shud. Chris Lloyds was the Rig Red's lead singer. Chris was born in Melbourne, and at the age of 7 won a Choir Scholarship to attend Christchurch Grammar School, South Yarra. After years of studying music in Melbourne, and then having parents who moved to Fiji, Chris moved to QLD to study and eventually settled there. He has numerous band credits and acting appearances including a stint on “Neighbours”. Chris also had numerous jingles on television...one of the many was his uplifting “Knock on your Door” for the Red Cross Appeal.

Big Red were described as a jazz rock/reggae band using Queensland's better known session musicians, Big Red went on to become one of the state’s most successful bands. In December 1982, after signing with Polygram Records, "The Traveller", Big Red's first single and film clip, was released to rave reviews. TV shows, Countdown, Sounds, Studio One and others played the surf orientated film clip. “The Traveller" was recorded at the Music Farm. Prior to this, ten songs written by Peter Blyton, Tim Gaze and Chris Lloyds were recorded at Suite 16 in Brisbane, however none of these songs have ever been released on C.D. In 1983 Big Red recorded five songs at Billy Fields' Paradise Studios in Sydney with Bill McDonough producing. Unfortunately these too were never released as the band played its last gig on the 30th June, 1983. One of the more memorable appearances was the day Chris and band appeared at the “Summerjam” outdoor concert with Australian Crawl, Goanna and Bullamakanka.

An incomplete muso list for Big Red: Chris Lloyds, Peter Blyton, Peter Willersdorf, Scott Williams, Tim Gaze (ex Tamam Shud), Robbie France, Annette Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Jon Carson and Brett Williams who went on to join "The Choir Boys".

Frankie is chuffed to know that people still regard his work in high esteem.

DOWNLOAD NO.146 - AUTUMN

HAVE YOU WONDERED WHY I KEEP POSTING CERTAIN GROUP'S MUSIC? WELL, IT'S BECAUSE SOME GROUPS HAVE NOT HAD THEIR MUSIC PUT UP FOR SALE ON C.D. AND IN SOME CASES WHEN THEY DO HAVE A C.D. OUT, IT'S LIKE THE C.D. COMPILER HAS DELIBERATELY NOT FOUND THE BEST VERSION OF A MASTER TAPE TO TRANSFER TO C.D.

FOR EXAMPLE THIS DOWNLOAD CONTAINS "YELLOW RIVER" BY SYDNEY GROUP AUTUMN, WHICH HAS BEEN ON AT LEAST 4 C.D. COMPILATIONS IN 30 YEARS SINCE IT CHARTED BACK IN THE 1970S. THE VERSIONS I HAVE FOUND ON C.D. SO FAR ARE ALWAYS THE MONO SINGLE VERSIONS WHICH HAVE IN SOME CASES COME FROM SCRATCHY RECORDS AND HAVE CLICKS AND POPS EVIDENT, OR HAVE COME FROM MASTER TAPES BUT WITH SO MUCH COMPRESSION ADDED THAT YOU CAN'T HEAR THE CYMBALS IN THE BACKING MUSIC...

FOR THIS DOWNLOAD, I HAVE TRANSFERRED THE STEREO ALBUM VERSION OF "YELLOW RIVER"AND 20 SECONDS OF THE MONO C.D. VERSION FOR YOU TO BE ABLE TO MAKE A COMPARISON. FESTIVAL RECORDS HAVE ISSUED "YELLOW RIVER" ON C.D. ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO....I'M SURE WHEN YOU LISTEN TO THE DIFFERENCE YOU'LL UNDERSTAND WHY AUDIOPHILES LIKE MYSELF WOULD PREFER TO MAKE COPIES OF OUR VINYL ALBUMS RATHER THAN HAVE INFERIOR TRANSFERS THROWN ONTO C.D.S.

THIS DOWNLOAD IS AN EXTENDED TOM MIX VERSION OF THE SUPERIOR ALBUM VERSION OF AUTUMN'S "YELLOW RIVER":

DOWNLOAD NO.144 - THE VENETIANS

The Venetians released their first 7" single "Sound On Sound" in 1983 which attracted a lot of airplay. Their second single "Chinese I's" generated some chart action while the band began to build their reputation as a live act. Following the release "Ooh La La" as the first single from the album Step Off The Edge, they got their first major break: as opening act for the Split Enz. From the album, the band released the second single "Shine The Light" in February 1985. Near the end of 1985, Venetians went into the studio with producer Mark Opitz to cut two songs, including the chartbusting "So Much For Love" which scaled the Australian singles charts, peaking at #6 on the national charts in March 1986. The Venetians then embarked on a two-month Australian tour, with The Church, and released "Inspiration," their follow-up to "So Much For Love." Both singles, and a third "If Somebody Loves You" are featured on Calling In The Lions, their first album released on the Chrysalis label. Chrysalis releasing Calling in the Lions and the single "So Much for Love" in the United States. In 1987, the Venetians produced three singles, "Amazing World", "Bitter Tears" and "Must Believe", but the chart success of Calling in the Lions wasn't to be repeated and the band broke up the following year.

The majority of their recording work had 12" remixes done as most of their hits were club oriented dance tracks...There have been some lucky individuals, who've found some of these on compilation dance albums, but the majority of them have not made it to C.D. There is no "Greatest Hits " C.D.

Singles

  • "Sound On Sound" (May, 1983) #59
  • "Chinese I's" (November, 1983) #31
  • "Ooh La La" (November, 1984)
  • "Shine The Light" (February, 1985) # 41
  • "So Much for Love" (December, 1985) #6
  • "Inspiration" (March, 1986) #27
  • "If Somebody Loves You" (June, 1986) # 42
  • "Let It All Go" (1986)

*(SEE PREVIOUS POSTINGS FOR "DAY BY DAY" AND "WALTZING MATILDA").

COLLEEN HEWETT'S EARLY HITS HAVE BEEN IGNORED BY C.D. COMPILERS AND VERY FEW OF HER GEMS HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE DIGITAL TREATMENT.

COLLEEN'S CAREER HAS GONE FROM THE 1960s TO THE PRESENT AND SHE IS STILL MANAGING TO PUT OUT NEW MUSIC. IT IS A SHAME THAT HER OLD SONGS DON'T GET A LOOK-IN!

FOR DOWNLOAD IS HER #38 HIT FROM 1973 CALLED "SIT YOURSELF DOWN" WHICH SHOWS JUST HOW ACCOMPLISHED SHE IS. "SIT YOURSELF DOWN" WAS A STEPHEN STILLS SONG AND SHE DID A GREAT VERSION.

THE VERSION RIPPED FOR DOWNLOAD WAS FROM HER 1974 GREATEST HITS ALBUM WHICH ALSO CONTAINED "CARRY THAT WEIGHT". THE VINYL RIP IS VERY GOOD AS I HAVE KEPT THIS ALBUM UNDER WRAPS SINCE I WAS 18 YEARS OLD.

DOWNLOAD NO.142 - PETER MCLEAN

A singer called Peter McLean from Sydney had a mid top 20 hit in 1973 called "Tom". From memory, it was on a record which I think was an RCA subsidiary company. The song got chart action in both Sydney and Brisbane where it got to #27. The "B" flip was called "Fantasy Child". As far as I know it was not followed up by any further hits and I don't know what Peter McLean did after this one hit wonder! It has never been released on C.D. Any song which contains my name can't be all that bad, eh?

DOWNLOAD NO.140 - CHRISTIE ALLEN

Christie Allen (real name June Allen) b: 12 September 1954 U.K. d: 12 August 2008 Perth Western Australia. Whilst performing in a band, Pendulum, with her brothers in Perth she came to the attention of songwriter and record producer Terry Britten (he co-wrote "Devil Woman" for Cliff Richard). Impressed by Christie's vocal ability, he began working with her and a recording contract with Mushroom resulted. She released her first single "You Know That I Love You", which although it wasn’t a major hit, did attract enough airplay and positive reviews to indicate bigger things for the future. Her next three singles from her debut album Magic Rhythm were substantial hits. The first single was a ballad "Falling In Love With Only You", in April, 1979. Her next two singles were strongly influenced by the popular disco style - "Goosebumps" in September, 1979, and "He's My Number One" in 1980. With 7” single sales of 60,000, "Goosebumps" would be Christie's greatest success and was one of the highest selling singles of the year. When "Goosebumps" took off, she toured with The Hot Band which comprised Greg Cook (guitar; ex-Cam-Pact, Mondo Rock), Max Chazan (guitar; ex-Rubes), Michael Hegerty (bass; Richard Clapton Band), Rick Puchala (drums; Richard Clapton Band) and Bruce Haymes (organ; ex-Rubes, Richard Clapton Band).

Her final album Detour had 3 singles. The album and singles have never been released on C.D. Considering she outsold most of the other people in her era it is a shame that her work is not more widely recognised.

Singles:

  • "You Know That I Love You" - Mushroom (1978) #67
  • "Falling in Love with Only You" - Mushroom (April, 1979) #20
  • "Goosebumps" - Mushroom (September, 1979) #3
  • "He's My Number One" - Mushroom (January, 1980) #4
  • "Magic Rhythm" - Mushroom (May, 1980) #38
  • "Baby Get Away" - Mushroom (August, 1980) #38
  • "Switchboard" - Mushroom (November, 1980)
  • "Don't Put Out the Flame" - Mushroom (March, 1981) #68

I have extended and remixed one of Christie's last singles “Baby Get Away” which now has massive driving drums and runs a good 6 minutes…so anyone who wants an aerobic workout get this one, it’s hot! Oh, and please feel free to phone a music executive and ask why Christie's last work has not been placed on C.D.?

DOWNLOAD NO.139 - VITABEATS

Andrew and Lissa Barnum met producer Mark Moffat who got them signed to the Hot Music Co. through Festival / EMI records as an independent act called Vitabeats. Vitabeats created their national independent dance hits “Boom Box” and “Audrey Hepburn” which led to the release of the album “Spot the Spanner” in the mid 80s. Andrew wrote all the songs on the album. Throughout his music career, art and design has always been an important ingredient, together with Lissa creating covers and designs for Inxs, Eurogliders, Vitabeats, Mark Callaghan, Mary Jo Starr, Jenny Morris (QED), Anne Kirkpatrick, Audio Murphy, Fully Functional (funk compilation), Loudspeaker, Red Rivers, Mark Lucas and Bloomers One. The single had not been on an official C.D. but in 2004 a modern dance remix was issued.

DOWNLOAD NO.138 - THE RUNNERS

Here is another single from an Australian band The Runners which has not made it to C.D. The single "Twins" was released in 1984 after their first Runners album and singles had been out circa 1983. The band was: Mark Edwards (v,g), Paul McNaughton (b,v), Trevor Reading (g,v), & Grant Hamston (d,v). Paul McNoughton, bass player for The Runners became Paul Norton and had a couple of huge Aussie hits in 1989 with "Stuck On You" and "Under A Southern Sky". Prior to this, singer Mark Edwards also released an album and several singles. Paul McNaughton (Norton) is also the husband of Wendy Stapleton, lead singer with Wendy And The Rockets, another Melbourne based band from the 80's. DOWNLOAD NO.137 - HEROES

* (SEE PREVIOUS POST ON BAND "RABBIT" AND SINGLE "LADY LA DI DA").

In October 1977 ex-Rabbit band members, Jim Porteus, Mark Tinson and Phil Screen recruited Peter De Jong and renamed themselves Heroes. Heroes based themselves in Newcastle, but signed to the Sydney-based Albert Productions. The band's debut album, "Heroes" (October 1980), yielded the singles "Baby's Had a Taste", "The Star and the Slaughter" (January 1981). Heroes were Newcastle's top rock attraction, with both singles making the Top 10 locally. The album did even better by reaching #1.

Heroes other claim to fame is that they were the last band to play at Newcastle's Star Hotel, the controversial closure of which sparked off street violence and rioting that night - Cold Chisel have a song about this event also. Heroes broke up in 1982. In 1983, Mark Tinson and Phil Screen joined the band "Swanee".

DOWNLOAD NO.136 - MILLIONAIRES

Back in the 1970s The Millionaires from Melbourne had 3 or 4 songs recorded with at least 2 singles out and were booked to make an album but I think the project was shelved. Their first single called "It's A Deal" sounded a bit like a “Skyhooks” song and got panned at the time for being so. The second single was called “Don’t Mention The Junta”. One of the band members Vynhal Henry (violinist) went by the name of “Jimmy Tomorrow”. Tim Brosnan (guitarist) went on to play in Paul Kelly’s band “The Dots”. The singles have never been released on C.D.

Members:

Brosnan Tim (g) 1975-1977, Hicks David (d) 1977, Leeson Steve (b,bv) 1975-1977, Segnit Karl (d) 1975-1977, Smith Nick (v,g) 1975-1977, Vynhal Henry (viol) 1975-1977, Walters Reynold Barton (g) 1977.

DOWNLOAD NO.135 - LES GOCK W/ SLEEMAN AND HENNESSY

Les Gock originally became famous through joining the Australian band Hush (see previous section for "Get The Feeling" by Hush). As well as being a guitarist, Les was also a writer and co-producer, occupations that earned him 12 Gold Awards. After leaving Hush, Les became a successful music and sound design director in film and television soundtracks. One of his Les Gock’s early jingles that became an anthem in Newcastle NSW was the song “Our Town” sung by Sleeman and Hennessy. This song was commissioned by the Newcastle Permanent Building Society but ended up having a life well after the television campaign ended. The song “Our Town” was recorded in 1978 and as far as I know it features Les in the guitar solo. This single has appeared on a few compilation vinyl albums but has not made it to CD.

This is an edited Tom Mix version of the song:

DOWNLOAD NO.134 - VERTICAL HOLD

Adelaide school chums, Mick Michalopoulos and Jim Mountzouros formed a group called Gladiator Tortoise at Unley High in 1972 using Beatles, Stones, and Pink Floyd as a cornerstone for their developing sound. By 1981 they'd changed their name to Vertical Hold and were turning heads with their catchy synth-pop, augmented by the beautifully conceived cello and keyboard parts of Hillary Frost. Personally, I thought the band were very much like "A Flock Of Seagulls" the acclaimed UK hit makers.

The release of their first Australian 45 rpm on the RCA label went to #1 on the Adelaide charts and Nationally top 50. In 1982 Gibson Kemp the head of Australian A & R for W.E.A. music signed them at the same time with INXS. Another #1 and top 50 single followed by an album. The album produced by British Producer Jon Kennet was acclaimed as a pop classic but it was not promoted west of the South Australian border. The group disbanded after the album stalled with the band members moving onto other interests. Gladiator Tortoise has reformed and currently Jim and Miki are recording new and old songs captured so others may come to accept that they still have some time in the sun!

DOWNLOAD NO.133 - RORY THOMAS

RORY THOMAS WAS A KEYBOARD PLAYER IN A NUMBER OF OZ BANDS IN THE 1960S AND 70S, AND A MUSIC ARRANGER FOR NUMEROUS OTHERS. HIS ONLY 7" SINGLE IN HIS NAME WAS A 1975 EXPERIMENTAL DOUBLE-SIDED 45 RPM CALLED "FIRE WHEELS", ON SIDE "A", AND "SKATEBOARD FREAKOUT" ON THE FLIP.

THE CONCEPT WAS TO TAKE THE NOISES MADE BY SKATEBOARDS AND RUN THEM INTO SOME KIND OF SYNTHESIZER KEYBOARD SO THAT THEY BECAME AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE MUSIC. BOTH SONGS ARE SHORT AND WOULD HAVE MADE IDEAL T.V. SHOW THEMES.

BOTH TUNES ARE VERY MUCH LIKE THE INSTRUMENTAL TRACKS THE SPOTNICKS, TORNADOES OR VENTURES WOULD HAVE DONE IN THE 1960S...ONLY OF COURSE RORY WAS FROM OZ AND IT WAS THE 70S.

I WAS OFFERED A BIG SUM OF MONEY TO SELL THE 7” SINGLE BECAUSE IT IS SO RARE…I WONDER IF RORY WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT HIS WORK WOULD BE THAT COLLECTABLE SOME 30 YEARS LATER AND BY SOMEONE WHO CAME FROM OVERSEAS AND HAD BEEN HUNTING FOR THESE 2 SONGS FOR AGES...

IF YOU HAVE SURROUND SOUND AT HOME, YOU'D APPRECIATE THE EFFECTS. BOTH SONGS ARE REALLY GOOD CONSIDERING THE ERA IN WHICH THEY WERE MADE.

UNFORTUNATELY, THE TRANSFER I DID FROM VINYL IS NOT VERY GOOD AS THE SCRATCH REMOVING TOOL ALSO THOUGHT THE SKATEBOARD SOUND EFFECTS WERE SCRATCHES. OF COURSE THE SINGLE HAS NEVER SURFACED ON ANY C.D.

FOR THOSE WHO LIKE TO SURF ON LAND, YOU GET BOTH SONGS IN A ZIP FILE...COWABUNGA DUDES!

DOWNLOAD NO.132 - STARS

The band Stars are a legendary Adelaide band who shot to fame with their first single “Quick On The Draw” in 1976 followed by their second single “With A Winning Hand”.

Circa 1975, Stars were a support act for Little River Band. Beeb Birtles (a member of L.R.B.) was impressed with their work, recommended Stars for a
record contract, got them signed and also produced their first single. Legendary Ernie Rose produced their second 7" hit. The band originally consisted of Mick Pealing (vocals), Mal Eastick (guitar), Glyn Dowling (drums) and Graham Thompson (bass). After the success of their first 2 singles they added Andy Durant as a second guitarist circa 1977 who wrote their third hit “Mighty Rock”. The band was able to sustain a chart run for more than 4 years and had a great deal of work here and overseas. The city where they charted most was Melbourne with many of their 7” singles making very good sales.

Andy Durant died from cancer on 6 May 1980 aged 25. Later that year Mal Eastick organised the Andrew Durant memorial
concert in Melbourne. The concert featured Stars, Jimmy Barnes, Renée Geyer, Richard Clapton and many more. The profits from the concert and sale of the double album and DVD went to The Andrew Durant Cancer Research Centre.

If you would like to know more about the Stars band, Mal and Mick both have sites where you can see what they boys are doing nowadays. Mal, in particular, is very generous with his time. Please click the links:
