DOWNLOAD NO.34 - DISCO LADY

"DISCO LADY" BY DARK TAN WAS ONE OF THE FIRST 12" RECORDS MADE BY AN OZ GROUP.

THE LEAD SINGER OF DARK TAN WAS ALSTON KOCH WHO WAS BORN IN SRI LANKA BUT IS NOWADAYS A NATURALISED AUSSIE. ALSTON WAS NOT ONLY THE LEAD SINGER BUT CHIEF WRITER OF MOST OF DARK TAN'S MATERIAL.

DARK TAN AND ALSTON HAD SUCCESS IN OZ, ASIA AND EUROPE. THE GROUP WAS ALWAYS ON T.V. DURING THE LATE 1970S PLUGGING "DISCO LADY". THEY HAD APPEARANCES ON COUNTDOWN, SOUNDS, BANDSTAND, HEY HEY IT'S SATURDAY & INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCES FOLLOWED WHEN THEY APPEARED ON T.V. WITH ABBA IN AUSTRALIA. "DISCO LADY" WAS NEAR THE TOP OF THE CHARTS FOR 8 WEEKS IN 3 CONTINENTS. IT IS FUNNY EH, WITH ALL ITS PROFILE THAT R.C.A. HAVE NOT PUT "DISCO LADY" ON C.D. NOR THE ALBUMS THAT FOLLOWED.

ALSTON WAS COMMISSIONED LATER TO WRITE, PRODUCE AND PERFORM ON THE AMERICA’S CUP ALBUM AND CONTRIBUTED TO THE SONG ‘KOOKABURRA’.

ALSTON HAS KEPT A MUSIC PROFILE UNTIL PRESENT DAY. HIS LAST BIG OFFERING WAS TO WRITE A CRICKET SONG FOR MUTTIAH MURALIDARAN ‘MURALI’

HERE IS THE EXTENDED TOM MIX VERSION OF "DISCO LADY" EXTENDED FROM THE 7" SINGLE.

DOWNLOAD NO.33 - CHEAPSKATE

"CHEAPSKATE" WAS AN ALIAS USED BY CAMERON SYRETT WHO BECAME A LONG-TIME COUNTRY RADIO D. J.

"ROLLER DANCIN'"
WAS ISSUED ON THE K-TEL ALBUM "ACTION REPLAY" IN 1978.

CHEAPSKATE (CAMERON) HAD HIS SONG OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED AS A SINGLE IN 1981.

TODAY THE SONG IS REGARDED AS A CLASSIC DISCO HIT AND MOST PEOPLE PROBABLY DON'T KNOW OF ITS AUSSIE ORIGIN. IT WAS MADE TO CASH IN ON THE ROLLER DANCING CRAZE THAT CAME WITH TEEN MOVIES OF THE TIME.

NOWADAYS CAMERON IS WORKING ON RADIO 2KA (COOL COUNTRY RADIO). IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO CORRESPOND HIS LAST
KNOWN E-MAIL WAS: c_syrett@hotmail.com

THIS DOWNLOAD IS THE EXTENDED TOM MIX 12" WHICH IS 5:30 MINS. THE ORIGINAL 7" SINGLE WAS ONLY 3 MINS LONG. IT WAS OVER BEFORE YOU COULD GET YOUR SKATES ON (LOL).

DOWNLOAD NO.32 - JO JO ZEP

JO JO ZEP & THE FALCONS (JOE CAMILLERI) HAD A SOLID CHART RUN IN OZ. JUST AS THINGS BEGAN TO EXPAND OVERSEAS FOR THE GROUP THE BAND SUDDENLY IMPLODED IN 1983.

THIS DOWNLOAD WAS A 12" REMIX BASED ON THEIR LAST SINGLE "LOSING GAME". IT WAS MADE 1982-83 JUST WHEN THEY HAD THEIR WORK READY FOR THE U.S.A. MARKET.

THE 7" SINGLE WAS THEIR FIRST RELEASE STATESIDE. THE SINGLE RARELY APPEARS ON C.D. AND THIS 12" MIX IS ANOTHER ULTRA RARE RELEASE WHICH MADE IT TO VINYL BUT HAS NOT APPEARED ON C.D.

"LOSING GAME" WAS THE LAST SINGLE ISSUED UNDER "JO JO ZEP & THE FALCONS" NEXT JOE CALLED HIS GROUP "THE BLACK SORROWS" AND FOR ABOUT 18 YEARS HE HAD CHART SUCCESS WITH NEW BAND MEMBERS AND SINGERS. SOMETIMES EX-FALCONS WERE USED AS MUSOS ON HIS NEW WORK WITH "THE SORROWS".

ENJOY THE VINYL VERSION OF "LOSING GAME" (U.S.A. REMIX 12").

DOWNLOAD NO.31 - MONTE VIDEO & THE CASSETTES

MONTE VIDEO A.K.A. MURRAY GRINDLEY, EX MEMBER OF N.Z. GROUP "THE UNDERDOGS", MADE A 1982 TOP 40 HIT WITH THE SURPRISING TITLE "SHOOP SHOOP DIDDY WOP CUMMA CUMMA WANG DANG".

MY FAVOURITE LINE IS "WHAT KIND OF A GIRL DO YOU THINK I AM"...WHICH IN ITS DAY WAS ALMOST A NOD TO TRANSGENDER LEANINGS....IN A WHOLSOME KINDA WAY, OF COURSE!

THE SONG WAS FULL OF SUGGESTIVE "NUDGE-NUDGE-WINK-WINK" NAUGHTINESS AND WAS CONSIDERED MORE A NOVELTY HIT THAN ANYTHING ELSE. IT WAS RECORDED IN N.Z. BROUGHT TO AUSTRALIA FOR MIXING AND EDITING THEN RELEASED ON MUSHROOM RECORDS. IT MADE RESPECTABLE FIGURES IN THE CHARTS IN 1982, IT GOT TO NO.2 IN N.Z. AND NO.11 IN OZ.

THE 12" EXTENDED MIX WAS ISSUED ON THE "WHITE LABEL" IN 1983 FOR WHEN THE SONG WAS RELEASED IN THE U.K. SADLY, AS FAR AS I KNOW, IT SANK WITHOUT A TRACE IN BLIGHTY. THE 7" SINGLE VERSION HAS BEEN ISSUED ON C.D. ON A SERIES CALLED "WHERE WERE YOU IN 1983?"

THIS DOWNLOAD IS THE ULTRA RARE 12" MIX FROM MY OWN VINYL COLLECTION.

VICTORIA IS AN ACTRESS AND HAS APPEARED IN THE "YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS", "PRISONER", "ECHO POINT", "BLUE HEELERS", "SOMETHING IN THE AIR" & "M.D.A."

DOWNLOAD NO.29 - RENEE GEYER

RENEE GEYER IS KNOWN MORE FOR HER SULTRY WHITE SOUL TRACKS THAN FOR HER DANCE FLOOR DIVA HITS.

THIS DOWNLOAD IS THE VINYL 12" MIX OF "TROUBLE IN PARADISE". IT CAME OUT AROUND 1983 AND WAS A CLUB HIT IN THE METROPOLITAN AREAS OF OZ. IT WAS RELEASED OVERSEAS BUT NOT WITH ANY HYPE OR FANFARE. TYPICAL!

RENEE IS NOT A CONVINCING DANCE-MIX DIVA BUT THIS TRACK HAS A GOOD GROOVE AND IS A LATE NIGHT CLUB FAVE.

HER SULTRY VOICE SOUNDS A BIT WASHED OUT IN THE 12" MIX. USUALLY SHE IS MORE RESONANT AND HAS A DEEPER TIMBRE.

THE 7" SINGLE VERSION SHOWS UP ON NUMEROUS C.D. COMPILATIONS AND GREATEST HITS. HOPE YOU LIKE THE 12" MIX. IT WOULD BE NICE TO GET THIS ONE ON COMPACT DISC, ONE DAY.

DOWNLOAD NO.28 - MOJO SINGERS / SHARON REDD & GROOVE MYRES

ONE OF THE BIGGEST HITS OF 1979 WAS C'MON AUSSIE C'MON.

THIS SONG HAS BEEN ISSUED ON C.D. BUT IF YOU LISTEN CAREFULLY EACH VERSION HAS BEEN LIFTED FROM VINYL. TAPE HISS, SCRATCHES, POPS AND CLICKS ARE EVIDENT ON THEM ALL. I SUSPECT THE MASTER HAS BEEN "LOST".

THE SONG ORIGINALLY AIRED ON T.V. AS A PROMO FOR THE COMING CRICKET SEASON. IT WAS SUNG BY ALLAN JOHNSON AND WRITTEN BY ALAN MORRIS AND ALLAN JOHNSON...IT WAS THEIR SURNAMES THAT PROVIDED THEIR COMPANY'S NAME: MOJO = MO(MORRIS) JO(JOHNSON).

WHEN THE SONG WAS USED AS A T.V. ADVERTISEMENT THE VERSE AND CHORUS STRUCTURE WAS DIFFERENT TO WHAT WAS LATER EDITED AND SOLD AS THE 7" SINGLE.

ALLAN JOHNSON AND ALAN MORRIS HAD NUMEROUS COMMERCIALS AND ADS TO THEIR CREDIT....ONE OF THE BIG ONES FROM THE 1980S WAS "I FEEL LIKE A TOOHEYS, OR TWO". THEY ALSO PENNED THE INFAMOUS MARGARINE COMMERCIAL "YOU OUGHT TO BE CONGRATULATED".

THE OTHER LINK TO C'MON AUSSIE C'MON IS THAT IN THE SONG MENTION IS MADE OF CRICKET PLAYER "DOUG WALTERS". DOUG IS MY UNCLE-IN-LAW, AND YES, HE ALWAYS CHEWED GUM...& STILL DOES!

FOR DOWNLOAD I HAVE SET UP 2 EXAMPLES OF THE MOJO'S WORK. THE FIRST ONE TAKEN FROM VINYL IS MY RE-WORKED C'MON AUSSIE C'MON AND THE SECOND IS AN AMACO PETROL AD FROM BACK IN THE EARLY 1970S. THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THE PETROL COMMERCIAL I WAS WONDERING IF SOMEONE HAD PERSUADED LEGENDARY AUSSIE SINGER KEVIN JOHNSON TO DO AN AD BECAUSE THE VOICE SOUNDED SO SIMILAR.

For those who had the original red plastic single of "Preferential Matter" there was a "b" side called "Where The Mind Can Breathe" by Sharon Redd and Groove Myers...Sharon had a hit in 1969 called "Easy To Be hard" recorded here in Oz. She was a cast member of HAIR along with Marcia Hines who stayed in OZ. Sharon went back to America and her career took off when she recorded the classic dance hit "Beat The Street".

DOWNLOAD NO.26 - DAVE AND THE DERROS

"DAVE AND THE DERROS" WAS CREATED BY LEAD SINGER DAVID JONES (WATMUFF). DAVID JONES WAS A RADIO STATION DISC JOCKEY BASED IN NEWCASTLE N.S.W.

DAVID HAD A LARGE REPERTOIRE OF RADIO CHARACTER VOICES, ONE OF WHICH WAS HIS BELOVED “DAVE THE DERRO”. DAVID LIKED TO MAKE PARODY SONGS FOR HIS RADIO SHOW. THIS EVENTUALLY ALLOWED HIM TO WORK UP AN ACT BASED ON "DAVE". HE COMPLEMENTED HIS PERFORMANCES WITH AN EVER CHANGING BACKING BAND OF MUSOS. SOME OF THE VARIOUS MUSOS BACKED JOHN PAUL YOUNG.

BACK IN 2004 I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF HELPING DAVID CONVERT SOME OF HIS COMEDY ROUTINES TO C.D. AS HE WANTED TO PRESERVE HIS WORK. WHILST DOING THIS I ASKED IF HE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SOME 12” REMIXES DONE? WHEN HE SAID YES, I COMPLETED TWO FOR HIM:, “NICE LEGS SHAME ABOUT THE FACE (ULTIMATE TOM MIX) AND “TWO CANS OF BEER AND A PACKET OF CHIPS (EXTENDED TOM MIX). (CLICK OPEN HIS MESSAGE).

DAVE HAS GIVEN ME KIND PERMISSION TO INCLUDE SOME SONGS BELOW FOR DOWNLOAD.

"EXTENDED FOURPLAY BY DAVE":

1) NICE LEGS SHAME ABOUT THE FACE (ULTIMATE TOM MIX)

2) UP YOUR NOSE WITH A RUBBER HOSE (MONO 7”)

3) DEATH TO DISCO (MONO 7”)

4) TWO CANS OF BEER AND A PACKET OF CHIPS (EXTENDED TOM MIX)

DOWNLOAD NO.25 - SKYHOOKS

THE FORMAT FOR 12" MIXES WAS NOT ADOPTED BY ALL OZ ARTISTS OF THE 1970S-1980S BUT SKYHOOKS HAD A COUPLE OF EXTENDED REMIXES.

THE ONE FOR DOWNLOAD HERE HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED ON C.D. IT IS THE RARE ORIGINAL OZ VERSION FOUND ONLY ON A COUPLE OF VINYL PRESSINGS. THE MORE COMMON ONE WAS THE U.S. DANCE REMIX WHICH HAS ALSO BEEN DISTRIBUTED ON C.D. SINGLE.

THE BASIC STRUCTURE OF THE SONG HAS BEEN EXTENDED EVEN MORE BY TOM MIX INC. NOW IT HAS A MORE FRIENDLY OPENING DRUM SEQUENCE WHERE IT CAN BE FADED OVER THE PREVIOUS SONG WHEN WORKING AT LIVE D.J. VENUES. I HAVE EXTENDED THE ORIGINAL TO ALMOST 7 MINS LONG.

DOWNLOAD NO.22 - JOHNNY ASHCROFT

JOHNNY ASHCROFT A.K.A. "THE BARON".

JOHNNY HAS HAD A COUPLE OF OFFBEAT AND VASTLY DIFFERENT RELEASES IN HIS CAREER.

HE STARTED HIS HIT RUN WITH A COUNTRY BALLAD "LITTLE BOY LOST" IN 1960 BUT BY THE MID 1970S HE WAS TRYING DIFFERENT GUISES. HIS NEXT BIG HIT WAS "HOLY JOE THE SALVO" IN 1975, A POP ORIENTED BALLAD.

NOT ONE TO PIGEONHOLE HIMSELF HE TRIED DISCO AND BY 1981 HIS NEXT, ALBEIT MINOR HIT, WAS A 12" DANCE MIX OF "SIXTEEN TONS OF HIT THE ROAD JACK". THE DISCO 12" WAS 6 MINUTES LONG AND RELEASED UNDER THE ALTER EGO OF "THE BARON". JOHNNY'S PARTNER GAY KAYLER ALSO FEATURED ON THE BARON ALBUM CALLED "A TIME FOR A CHANGE" (SEE COVER PICTURE ABOVE).

DOWNLOAD NO.21 - FIELDING AND DYER

"THE GHOST" - A FOLLOW-UP TO "THE WHALE" BY TERRY FIELDING AND FRED DYER.

TERRY AND FRED FORMED A DUO IN SYDNEY IN THE LATE 1960S AND SANG TOGETHER FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS BEFORE GOING INTO T.V. COMPETITIONS LIKE "NEW FACES" IN THE EARLY 1970S. THEY WON THE GRAND FINAL. THEY ALSO WON A BANDSTAND "SONG WRITERS AWARD" WITH THEIR SONG "BIG WHITE HORSE" WHICH WAS RELEASED IN DUE TIME AS THE FLIP SIDE TO "THE GHOST".

AFTER THEIR NEW FACES WIN THE DUO WERE SIGNED TO THE OZ SPIN LABEL. THEY RELEASED "THE WHALE" AND HAD HUGE INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS. THEN THEY WERE FACED WITH WHAT TO RELEASE NEXT? THEY CHOSE THE COMPETITION WINNER "BIG WHITE HORSE" AND WROTE A NEW 'A' SIDE "THE GHOST" IN THE STYLE OF THEIR PREVIOUS HIT. IT WAS NOT AS SUCCESSFUL AS THE FIRST HIT. "THE WHALE" IS STILL POPULAR TODAY AS A BUSH BALLARD AND HAS BEEN RELEASED ON C.D. COMPILATIONS.

IN 1998 THE DUO BOUNCED BACK WHEN THEY RELEASED A C.D. OF THEIR RE-RECORDED GREATEST HITS CALLED: "THE WHALE & OTHER STORY SONGS".

THE DOWNLOAD HERE IS THE MONO 7" SINGLE OF THE GHOST.
