DOWNLOAD NO.129 - TANGERINE PEEL W/ MIKE CHAPMAN

Mike Chapman, born Michael Chapman, 15 April 1947, Nambour, Queensland, is an Australian born record producer and songwriter who was a major force in the pop music industry in the early 1970s. Mike began his career in the music business in 1955 at the age of 8 singing on several radio shows in his native Australia. His love of pop music soon became an obsession and in 1967 he left Australia for London to pursue his childhood dream. Two years and two groups later (he was the singer in the Downliners Sect and Tangerine Peel) he wrote his first hit song “Soft Delights which was covered in Australia by the group “The New Dream” (their version of the single is finally about to be on CD at the start of Feb 2009 – see New Dream section further over). At roughly the same time “Funny Funny” by Sweet was a top 40 hit and the similarities are evident if you listen to the hook laden riffs in both tunes.

Mike helped create a string of hit singles for artists including Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Smokie, Blondie, Starship, The Knack, Nick Gilder, Pat Benatar, Tina Turner, Divinyls, Lita Ford, Scandal, Exile, Alabama, Holly Knight and Mud with co-writer and co-producer Nicky Chinn, creating a formularised sound that became identified with the "Chinnichap" brand. Just how did this compatible duo of Chinn and Chapman get together? Believe it or not Nicky was a regular customer in the restaurant where Mike Chapman was a waiter working temporarily in London. Conversation turned to song writing, and the two partners finding that they had similar interests decided to get together sometime.

The list of hits includes: “Mickey”, “Simply The Best”, “Tom Tom Turnaround”, “Better Be Good To Me”, “We Built This City”, “Little Willy”, “Ballroom Blitz”, “Blockbuster”, “Wig-Wam Bam”, “Can The Can”, “48 Crash”, “Devilgate Drive”, “Teenage Rampage”, “If You Think You Know How To Love Me”, “Living Next Door To Alice”, “Kiss You All Over”, “How Could This Go Wrong” and “Stumblin’ In”. Mike’s songs have topped the charts all around the world.

This download is for 2 songs by Tangerine Peel, Mike’s second group:

The album version of "Soft Delights" - a vinyl transfer.

The extended Tom Mix version of “Every Christian Lionhearted Man” - a CD transfer from "Maybe Someone Is Digging Underground". (This is an early Bee Gees written track).
