DOWNLOAD NO.42 - THE BEACHCOMBERS

WE HAD A LOT OF INTERESTING BANDS IN NEWCASTLE N.S.W. ONE OF THEM WAS THE BEACHCOMBERS. THEY WERE NAMED AFTER A LOCAL HOTEL WHERE THEY PLAYED AND IN SOME CASES, WHEN NEEDED THEY WERE FINANCED BY THE OWNER OF THE HOTEL.

THEY HAD 3 SINGLES AND 1 ALBUM:

45s:
1: Sing My Song / Gone Gone Gone (RCA Australia) (1970)
2: Song For Happy (RCA Australia) (1974)
3: Cruisin' (RCA Australia) (1975)

ALBUM:
The Beachcombers (RCA Australia) (1975)

THE SINGLE WHICH STARTED THEIR RUN HAD A "B" SIDE WHICH CHARTED EQUALLY AS WELL AS THE "A" SIDE.

HERE IS THE ULTRA RARE "B" SIDE "GONE GONE GONE".

DOWNLOAD NO.41 - WALLY MORRISON

I OFTEN WONDER WHAT HAPPENED TO WALLY? WHERE'S WALLY NOW?

WALLY MORRISON HAD A LOCAL DOUBLE-A-SIDE HIT SINGLE CALLED: "DOESN'T ANYBODY WRITE OLD LOVE SONGS ANYMORE" / "THE GLEN".

IT CHARTED WELL IN THE NEWCASTLE AND HUNTER VALLEY AREAS BUT DIDN'T MAKE BIG SALES OUTSIDE OF NSW.

THE RECORD WAS PRODUCED AT COL JOYE'S S A.T.A. STUDIOS IN SYDNEY. THE PIANO PLAYING IS VERY GOOD WHOEVER DID IT!

WAL MORRISON, AS HE BECAME KNOWN LATER, WENT FROM RADIO D.J. CAREER TO NEWS PRESENTER ON N.B.N THE LOCAL TELEVISION NETWORK.

HE HAD HIS OWN VOICE ACADEMY AND WORKED BEHIND THE SCENES AT N.B.N. ON NEWS PRODUCTION AND SO FORTH.

ENJOY THESE HIGHLY NOSTALGIC YE OLDIES FORM THE MID 1970S.

FIRST SIDE "A": "DOESN'T ANYBODY WRITE OLD LOVE SONGS ANYMORE"

From Wally:

Hi Tom,
I guess you must be over 30...Else, how would you have a copy of one of my singles? You've cleaned it up really well, btw. I'm sure you won't object to me passing it on to my niece. I'll get the other singles done too. For prosperity... and my kids. I've honestly neglected that part of my life because the latter years were so much more important. But here you are (and my niece) reminding me that I have a legacy I should share. I don't believe in coincidence. The arranger and pianist on 'Doesn't anybody write old love songs anymore' was Milton Saunders. He wasn't young then so he's probably passed away. So all the best. May you prosper. Most importantly, may the children you are teaching be blessed.
Kind Regards,
Wal Morrison.

DOWNLOAD NO.40 - LIVE IT UP

MENTAL AS ANYTHING HAD OVER TEN 12" DANCE REMIXES AND THE ONLY ONE TO MAKE IT TO C.D., AS FAR AS I CAN RECALL, WAS "ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC" THE OLD CHUCK BERRY SONG FROM THE MOVIE YOUNG EINSTEIN.

HERE IS THE TOM MIX 12" VERSION OF "LIVE IT UP" WHICH IS THE ORIGINAL MIX BUT SLIGHTLY LONGER IN THE DRUM BREAK SO YOU CAN CROSS-FADE IT INTO OTHER SONGS WHEN WORKING LIVE.

IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE MENTALS GET THEIR 12" MIXES ON C.D. SOON.....THE MASTER TAPES ARE PROBABLY RUSTING IN A VAULT SOMEWEHRE.

DOWNLOAD NO.39 - WENDY AND THE ROCKETTS

WENDY AND THE ROCKETTS (LEAD SINGER WENDY STAPLETON) HAD VARIOUS CHART SINGLES IN THE 1980S. "PLAY THE GAME" WAS PROBABLY THE BIGGEST HIT SINGLE.

AS FAR AS I KNOW THE 12" REMIX HAS NOT BEEN ON C.D. I DON'T RECALL IT GETTING MUCH PROMOTION EVEN IN ITS DAY.

THE 12" WAS MADE TO RUN AT A FASTER PACE THAN THE 7" SINGLE AND IT WAS ALMOST COMICAL BECAUSE OF THE FASTER B.P.M. THE BASS WAS REDUCED AND SOUNDED WEAKER THAN THE 7" SINGLE MIX AS WELL....NOT THE BEST WAY TO DO A 12" MIX REALLY...!

WENDY NOT ONLY WAS A TALENTED OZ SINGER BUT SHE ALSO APPEARED ON "NEIGHBOURS" AS A LOVE INTEREST FOR TOM OLIVER'S CHARACTER...

OVER THE YEARS WENDY HAS CONTINUED TO PERFORM AND WAS PART OF THE "COUNTDOWN SPECTACULAR" AND REGULARLY DOES SMALLER VENUES AND CLUBS. AT ONE STAGE SHE HAD A GIG WORKING WITH DEBBIE BYRNE.

THIS IS THE TOM MIX REMIX OF THE ORIGINAL 12"...MORE BASS AND SLOWER PACE...

ENJOY !

DOWNLOAD NO.38 - THE EXECUTIVES

AN OZ FAVOURITE OF THE 1960S, THE EXECUTIVES, HAD MANY EARLY CAREER HITS BUT IN THE 1970S THEY CHANGED LABEL TO POLYDOR AND THINGS SLOWLY DIED AWAY FOR THEM. I DON'T RECALL ANYTHING FROM THEIR POLYDOR YEARS BEING PLACED ON C.D.

ONE OF THEIR LAST HITS WAS "TINKER TAILIOR" WHICH IS A PLEASANT POP SONG BUT SOUNDS A LITTLE DATED NOWADAYS.

DOWNLOAD NO.37 - RABBIT

Rabbit was a short-lived Australian hard rock band from Newcastle, Australia. They looked like "The Sweet" but had a raunchier sound. They tried to crack the bigger markets and their company CBS did do a lot of promotion but sadly it didn't work at the time.

The band was formed in 1973 by Mark Tinson (guitar), Phil Screen (drums) and Jim Porteus (bass). Original vocalist Greg Douglas was replaced in 1974 by Dave Evans, formerly of AC/DC. Dave recorded the first couple of singles for AC/DC but was replaced by Bon Scott.

Rabbit's "Lady La Di Da" was a glam rock single that made the Top 5 in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. It still sounds pretty good after all these years but my converted vinyl doesn't do it justice.

This download is the single edit of "Lady La Di Da":
