ONE OF THE BIGGEST HITS OF 1979 WAS C'MON AUSSIE C'MON.
THIS SONG HAS BEEN ISSUED ON C.D. BUT IF YOU LISTEN CAREFULLY EACH VERSION HAS BEEN LIFTED FROM VINYL. TAPE HISS, SCRATCHES, POPS AND CLICKS ARE EVIDENT ON THEM ALL. I SUSPECT THE MASTER HAS BEEN "LOST".
THE SONG ORIGINALLY AIRED ON T.V. AS A PROMO FOR THE COMING CRICKET SEASON. IT WAS SUNG BY ALLAN JOHNSON AND WRITTEN BY ALAN MORRIS AND ALLAN JOHNSON...IT WAS THEIR SURNAMES THAT PROVIDED THEIR COMPANY'S NAME: MOJO = MO(MORRIS) JO(JOHNSON).
WHEN THE SONG WAS USED AS A T.V. ADVERTISEMENT THE VERSE AND CHORUS STRUCTURE WAS DIFFERENT TO WHAT WAS LATER EDITED AND SOLD AS THE 7" SINGLE.
ALLAN JOHNSON AND ALAN MORRIS HAD NUMEROUS COMMERCIALS AND ADS TO THEIR CREDIT....ONE OF THE BIG ONES FROM THE 1980S WAS "I FEEL LIKE A TOOHEYS, OR TWO". THEY ALSO PENNED THE INFAMOUS MARGARINE COMMERCIAL "YOU OUGHT TO BE CONGRATULATED".
THE OTHER LINK TO C'MON AUSSIE C'MON IS THAT IN THE SONG MENTION IS MADE OF CRICKET PLAYER "DOUG WALTERS". DOUG IS MY UNCLE-IN-LAW, AND YES, HE ALWAYS CHEWED GUM...& STILL DOES!
FOR DOWNLOAD I HAVE SET UP 2 EXAMPLES OF THE MOJO'S WORK. THE FIRST ONE TAKEN FROM VINYL IS MY RE-WORKED C'MON AUSSIE C'MON AND THE SECOND IS AN AMACO PETROL AD FROM BACK IN THE EARLY 1970S. THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THE PETROL COMMERCIAL I WAS WONDERING IF SOMEONE HAD PERSUADED LEGENDARY AUSSIE SINGER KEVIN JOHNSON TO DO AN AD BECAUSE THE VOICE SOUNDED SO SIMILAR.

For those who had the original red plastic single of "Preferential Matter" there was a "b" side called "Where The Mind Can Breathe" by Sharon Redd and Groove Myers...Sharon had a hit in 1969 called "Easy To Be hard" recorded here in Oz. She was a cast member of HAIR along with Marcia Hines who stayed in OZ. Sharon went back to America and her career took off when she recorded the classic dance hit "Beat The Street".

Hey there Tom,
ReplyDeleteI have a copy of the "Amaco" disc too. I remember another radio ad from that era for Jim Beam whisky along the lines of "Well uh,soft like a kiss,do you know what i mean,i mean that's where the drink is ,with Jim Beam" or word's to that effect.
Do you have a copy of that little ditty Tom?

ReplyDeleteHi Tom,
ReplyDeleteThanks very much for this one. I too have the Amoco floppy but mine is scratched beyond use. Any chance you can put up the Groove Meyer track as well.
I'd love to have a greatest hits selection of Mojo's best advertising jingles. Jo's voice is just so distinctive.
I believe he was in an Adelaide beat group in the early 60's - might have been Johnny Broome & The Handels but am not sure of that.
Cheers

Hi Tom,
ReplyDeleteAlan Morris "Mo" was my dad and I have just about every jingle they ever wrote on cd and dvd.
I'd be happy to send you an original copy of whatever Mojo jingle you might want.
Cheers
Ash
Hi Ash,
ReplyDeleteI was a client of your Dad's back in the early 80's (at That's Who - Daihatsu) and as well as being a great bloke I was just blown away by his talent. Mo & Jo are Aussie icons and what they did for Australian adverting can't be overstated.
Do you happen to have the Go Rocky jingle. Also love to get a couple of the Toohey's and Meadow Lee jingles,
Cheers
Kerro
Hey folks! I just discovered this place by accident right now - Im trying to track down a copy of that jingle for Jim Beam, with the insane country guitar playing all over it! "Well uh, soft like a kiss, do you know what i mean, i mean that's where the drink is, with Jim Beam!" - Yes, this same one as mentioned by Captain above! Any idea where I can locate this? I have a 1/2 crusty version on same tape somewhere - as in cassette, but Id love to hear it again, and maybe, just maybe learn the guitar in it! Thanks so much...
