TERRY AND FRED FORMED A DUO IN SYDNEY IN THE LATE 1960S AND SANG TOGETHER FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS BEFORE GOING INTO T.V. COMPETITIONS LIKE "NEW FACES" IN THE EARLY 1970S. THEY WON THE GRAND FINAL. THEY ALSO WON A BANDSTAND "SONG WRITERS AWARD" WITH THEIR SONG "BIG WHITE HORSE" WHICH WAS RELEASED
IN DUE TIME AS THE FLIP SIDE TO "THE GHOST".
AFTER THEIR NEW FACES WIN THE DUO WERE SIGNED TO THE OZ SPIN LABEL. THEY RELEASED "THE WHALE" AND HAD HUGE INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS. THEN THEY WERE FACED WITH WHAT TO RELEASE NEXT? THEY CHOSE THE COMPETITION WINNER "BIG WHITE HORSE" AND WROTE A NEW 'A' SIDE "THE GHOST" IN THE STYLE OF THEIR PREVIOUS HIT. IT WAS NOT AS SUCCESSFUL AS THE FIRST HIT. "THE WHALE" IS STILL POPULAR TODAY AS A BUSH BALLARD AND HAS BEEN RELEASED ON C.D. COMPILATIONS.
IN 1998 THE DUO BOUNCED BACK WHEN THEY RELEASED A C.D. OF THEIR RE-RECORDED GREATEST HITS CALLED: "THE WHALE & OTHER STORY SONGS".

ReplyDeleteThere are lots of people looking for a download of 'The Whale' but it doesn't seem to be available anywhere... I had a copy of it on a casseette tape done by Newcastle band Sligo Maid in the early 90's, but the tape finally died on me... PLEASE may we have a copy of 'The Whale?'
ReplyDeleteI have a digital copy of The Whale. It's a bit muddy due to it being ripped from the Sligo Maid cassette. The accordion player & the bass player are forming a band called The Foke.
