DOWNLOAD NO.85 - FAT BUBBLES

"SKATEBOARD QUEEN" WAS A TOP 40 HIT BY FAT BUBBLES - A STUDIO GROUP FROM MELBOURNE. THE MAIN MAN BEHIND THE SONG WAS STEVE GROVES WHO CUT HIS TEETH IN SUCH GROUPS AS TIN TIN (AMONGST OTHERS). STEVE CERTAINLY HAD AN EAR FOR CATCHY TUNES. HE WROTE "TOAST AND MARMALADE FOR TEA" WHICH WAS ONE OF THE BIG WORLD-WIDE HITS OF 1970. HE WROTE "I'M ON THE LOOSE (AGAIN)" WHICH WAS COVERED BY MARTY RHONE .

HIS BANDS INCLUDE: THE KINETICS, STEVE AND STEVIE, THE TRAP, RHOMBO'S WORLD, THE FUT, WILD HONEY, PIED PIPERS, STEVE GROVES BAND, LIQUID AMBER, BUSHWACKERS, MOVING CLOUDS, THE TREVOR LUCAS BAND, PURPLE DENTISTS....THERE WERE PROBABLY MORE...I'M NOT SURE EXACTLY HOW MANY ALL UP.

I DON'T THINK THE FAT BUBBLES SINGLE HAS EVER BEEN ON C.D. ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. I DON'T THINK STEVE REMEMBERS IT AS IT IS NOT LISTED ON HIS OWN WEB SITE.

TIN TIN REGULARLY HAVE BOOTLEG C.D.s PUT OUT ON THE BLACK MARKET IN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES BECAUSE THEY STILL SELL WELL TO THE DISCERNING LISTENER. SADLY, THEY HAVE NOT HAD ANY OF THEIR ALBUMS PUT OUT COMMERCIALLY ON C.D.

HERE IS A BEEFED UP TOM MIX 12" REMIX OF "SKATEBOARD QUEEN" WHICH RUNS ALMOST TO 5 MINS.

  1. I have the original single of Skateboard Queen myself. Thanks for the info about it, I was always interested in its background. It came out in the mid 70s I am guessing.
    Cheers,

  7. Knock knock, anyone home, Tom Mix? Just testing to see if this site is still monitored. The download link above for Skateboard Queen is broken, but I'm hoping that you might still have a copy of the remix, see this and be able to contact me. I have a story to tell you, since you clearly have an interest in the song/Steve etc and great knowledge of Australian music back then. Please reply if you see this, and I'll message you with some details that will interest you. Cheers.

  8. If you look on Youtube there is a conversation around 'Skateboard Queen' video which involves a Bryan Dawe who I think was John Clarke's partner in The Games. He states that the single was made on a Sunday night in Armadale using a local band. He wrote with Steve Groves and worked for Astor Records at the time. He also knew the producer Mike Loxton? Check it out and then have a look at Bryan Dawes Wikipedia entry??
