Poor old Dame Edna was born as Edna May Beazley in the rural city of Wagga Wagga, and started her stage career on 19 December 1955 as Mrs. Norm Everage, an "average Australian housewife" who by then was living in Moonee Ponds Victoria.
Edna has tried many times to break into international show business and has had numerous guest roles on inconsequential TV shows but still isn't as famous as she should be. It was nice that the Royal Family allowed her to keep her title after Norm died but honestly it's the only thing that has given her any clout...the Americans are probably more impressed than we are...
In the late 1980s she tried to not only cash in on everything Australian for the Bicentennial but she downright stole the limelight from one of our Oz TV exports - Neighbours! Edna got Tony Hatch's theme song and did a 7" single mix and a 12" "Caring And Sharing" mix. Even with all the payola behind it, it didn't make it to the top 40 anywhere in the world.
Here for download are the 2 mixes of "Theme from Neighbours"...
