DOWNLOAD NO.89 - THE SWINGERS

Counting The Beat” is a single by N.Z. rock band The Swingers - not an Aussie song whatsoever! This error is perpetuated constantly by C.D. compilers who release the song incessantly and regularly on albums with titles saying Australian Pop Hits (see C.D. cover at right)… Get it right big music companies - NO, it isn’t a song from Oz!

The 7” single was released in 1981 from their “Counting The Beat” album. The front man was Phil Judd from Split Enz. Although the band had several hit songs in N.Z., "Counting the Beat" was The Swingers' only major chart success in Australia and they are considered a one hit wonder in this country. If you ever get a chance to find the soundtrack or DVD of the 1982 Australian new wave film Starstruck, directed by Gillian Armstrong, do so: the Swingers perform a song called "One Good Reason”.

Counting The Beat” was #1 in Australia in March 1981. The song was also the number one charting song of 1981 in Australia according to the Kent Music Report end of year chart.

Of course it was always too short for dancing (running just 3 mins), so I had to make a longer version for use for club and mobile D.J. work. Here it is my longer Tom Mix 12” original. Enjoy!
