DOWNLOAD NO.307 - THE ORMSBY BROTHERS

The Ormsby Brothers shot to the top of the charts with their first single then slowly faded with less successful follow-ups. Their sound was almost like the USA Osmond Brothers who were enjoying world-wide success at the time.

Music producer Peter Dawkins was on a roll in the early 1970s with many top 40 hits to his credit but interestingly, none made it as high on the national charts, as a glossy remake of the old Lesley Gore hit “You Don’t Own Me” by Sydney sibling act The Ormsby Brothers, which peaked at #5. Peter said he looked back on that single, engineered by former Beatles studio assistant and later Sherbet producer Richard Lush, as the best of his early Australian productions.

The chart run for the Ormsby Brothers was not long but they made some very glossy pop while it lasted.

Singles:

You Don’t Own Me - 1973 #5

Sweet Virginia - 1974 #24

The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore – 1974 #21

God Knows I Tried – 1974 #25

Bad Day For Love – 1975

Depending on which charts you read the single “You Don’t Own Me” was either the second or fourth highest selling Oz single in 1973. The original single mix was also very short and came in about 3:30 mins. By taking the original CD mix and digitally looping parts etc I have been able to remake the song into a 6 min opus. Here for download is an extended Tom Mix version of "You Don't Own Me":

The New Dream have other songs on this blog. Please use search facility to locate them.

Many of the singles by New Dream are not yet on CD. Presently only "Groupie" and "Soft Delights" have made it to the digital medium.

One of their last singles "Ride A White Swan" was a very credible version of the T-Rex original. In my opinion it's better than the original - and I'm a huge T-Rex fan!

Singles

April 1969 "Yours Until Tomorrow" / "Turn Around"

July 1969 "Catchin' Up On Fun" / "You've Got That Certain Style"

1970 "Groupie" / "It's So Good To Be With You" #25

May 1971 "Soft Delights" / "You Got Me Singing" #21

DOWNLOAD NO.305 - DAME EDNA

Poor old Dame Edna was born as Edna May Beazley in the rural city of Wagga Wagga, and started her stage career on 19 December 1955 as Mrs. Norm Everage, an "average Australian housewife" who by then was living in Moonee Ponds Victoria.

Edna has tried many times to break into international show business and has had numerous guest roles on inconsequential TV shows but still isn't as famous as she should be. It was nice that the Royal Family allowed her to keep her title after Norm died but honestly it's the only thing that has given her any clout...the Americans are probably more impressed than we are...

In the late 1980s she tried to not only cash in on everything Australian for the Bicentennial but she downright stole the limelight from one of our Oz TV exports - Neighbours! Edna got Tony Hatch's theme song and did a 7" single mix and a 12" "Caring And Sharing" mix. Even with all the payola behind it, it didn't make it to the top 40 anywhere in the world.

Here for download are the 2 mixes of "Theme from Neighbours"...

DOWNLOAD NO.304 - AUSTEN TAYSHUS

Austen Tayshus (real name Sandy Gutman born March 17, 1954) is an Australian-Jewish comedian. His stage name is a play on words of "ostentatious", meaning "over-the-top".

Austen Tayshus had a major comedy breakthrough with his 1983 hit "Australiana" then slowly faded away with less successful follow-ups.

"Phantom Shuffle" from 1984 was one of the few singles that also got a 12" mix. It was not much different to the single version both going about 5 mins in length.

DOWNLOAD NO.300 - PROCLAIMERS

The Proclaimers were an Oz group from the early 1970s. They started in Melbourne and their lead singer was Johnathan Sommers.

Click the following link to an information site about him: http://thefoolandtheopera.blogspot.com/2008/12/podcast-jonathan-summers.html.

I don't know what happened to the Oz group but they had a few Christian music singles and then folded after 1974.

The song "Jesus Christ, What A Man" is a country ballad with nice slide guitar work. It came out in 1971 on the Fable label. It got to #47 nationally.

The follow-up singles were: "One More Mountain To Climb" in 1972 which got to #32 nationally, and a rather hard to find single called "All His Children" which got to #17 nationally in 1972, but was co-charting with 2 other versions: one by Oz singer Vic Christopher and the other by American singer Charlie Pride.

Their greatest hits CD "Wings Of A Dove" is available as of 2007 on the Fable label but it is missing one of their later singles, "All His Children"...

If you know of or have a copy of the song "All His Children" please let me know so I can send a copy to the folks at Ozburn as it they are searching for it?

DOWNLOAD NO.299 - RAJAHS WITH JOHNNY O'KEEFE

The group The Rajahs started as The R'Jays and backed other artists like Digby Richards in the 1950s. In the early 1960s, they had a few singles issued, one of which was "Kiss Me Now". Their original version flopped but later the song hit the top 40 when Johnny Young put it out using the Rajah's arrangement.

Johnny O'Keefe was always unhappy with his first version of the song "Shout", which charted in 1959, so when the opportunity came to re-record it he chose to do it with the Rajahs.

In 1964, after numerous recording attempts, the new version of "Shout" was unleashed on the buying public. It was better produced but the new ending was badly edited and lacklustre. Lulu's version was also doing the rounds at that stage, so it was not surprising the new version of "Shout" did not do the same business the original. It hit the top 40 in three states: #18 Sydney, #35 Brisbane and #22 Adelaide.

On the CD (cover shown above), "Shout" is credited as parts one and two but it not labelled correctly. It is not the full version of this song, it is only part one with an edited piece from part two. If you would like to read more about the group go to this site (click link): http://www.behindtherock.cjb.net/

DOWNLOAD NO.297 - THE SHOWMEN

The Showmen played on the same bill as The Missing Links at the Beatle's Village (according to contributor, Andrew Ainsworth) and the rhythm section was approached by Andy James to join up with The Missing Links. The Showmen's leader, Peter Ellison, was going to dissolve the combo. After the demise of The Missing Links in April '66, Baden & the late Ian Thomas rejoined the reformed Showmen.

In May 1965 The Showmen released their first single "Don't Deceive / Too Far Away". Later the same year they released "Naughty Girl / Too Much Monkey Business". Both singles were on the Lee Gordon owned Leedon label.

DOWNLOAD NO.294 - JENNY MORRIS AND Q.E.D.

Jenny Morris has other songs on this blog. Please use search facility to locate them.

Jenny Morris left NZ and headed off to Oz, and in 1983 became the lead singer of Q.E.D. which was a group that enjoyed 2 charting hits "Everywhere I Go" which got to #14 in 1984 and "This One" which peaked at #32 in 1984.

Morris formed Q.E.D. with Rex Goh who was an ex-member of the group Air Supply but by 1985 Jenny was already moving into solo work.

Both Q.E.D. songs hit the airwaves just as the 12" extended mix was becoming the norm for dance oriented tracks but none have been issued. The Q.E.D. album "Animal Magic" has been released on CD but is nowadays deleted.

Here for download is an extended 5:30 mins Tom Mix 12" version of "Everywhere I Go". The original single used to be less than 3 mins. I used the CD mix to make this extended version. Enjoy!

DOWNLOAD NO.293 - KEVIN JOHNSON

Kevin has other songs on this blog as well as a discography. Please use search facility to locate them.

Kevin Johnson had a couple of minor hits after releasing his first big hit single "Rock And Roll (I Gave you The Best Years Of My Life)" one of them being "Kedron Brook". The song is in waltz time and the lyrics hark back to an earlier era. The music which is mostly light and melodic has two heavier sections with a swirling full orchestra. Kevin's deep voice gives the song a lovely haunting edge.

Kedron Brook is a creek in Queensland near Brisbane....although I am not positive that this song is actually about this particular spot as there are numerous other Kedron Brooks in the world.

The backing band is "Cool Bananas" which of course is Rory O'Donohue's group. Rory being the Thin Arthur character from the Aunty Jack TV Show. Rory played guitar on many of Kevin's tracks and albums.

The version for download is the mono 7" single mix which is slightly different to the CD and album versions which have been available for some time.

DOWNLOAD NO.292 - BARRY CROCKER

Barry Hugh Crocker b: 1935 Geelong Victoria has other songs on this blog. Please use the search facility to locate them.

The 1969 vinyl E.P. here for download is one of those rare Festival releases that has 4 songs put onto a 45 rpm. The sound is quieter than a regular 45, so as to squeeze more songs into the same space. Louder songs need a wider groove pattern and therefore bigger gaps between the grooves...to pack more music onto an E.P. the music is sometimes compressed with the frequency range cut at both ends (bass and treble). The other thing to cut down some space is to have mono versions of the song, which was the case on the Barry Crocker E.P.

The "Please Don't Go" E.P. has the following 4 songs: "Please Don't Go", "My Cup Runneth Over", "If I Ruled The World" and "This Is My Song".

The 4 songs are placed in order and are separated by 2 second gaps. They are in a non-stop 12 minute mp3 file at 320kb.

DOWNLOAD NO.290 - OL' 55

The rock band Ol' 55 had some memorable top 40 hits when they first burst onto the scene in the mid 1970s then they went off the boil when Frankie J. Holden left to go solo. By the time they finished up they were recording sound-a-like medleys of oldies a bit like the Stars On 45 people....

"(I Want A) Rockin' Christmas" came out in 1976 and was still on the play lists in January 1977 when it was yanked because that's when Christmas hits are supposedly removed from radio play lists....it was done so when still at number one in Melbourne. In fact, it was number one for almost 7 weeks before it was dropped.

A version of the song has been released on CD, on a Festival collection called "Spin Into Christmas" but the version on CD is a remixed longer cut. The CD mix is from the Russell Crowe movie "The Sum Of Us" and was remixed by the original producer Charles Fisher. The original single was also 22 seconds shorter and had less bass.

Here for download is the original single version sung by Frankie J. Holden also starring Rockpile Jones and Wilbur Wilde. It was written by bassist Jim Manzie and Glenn A. Baker (manager).
