THE MOJO SINGERS WERE ALAN MORRIS AND ALLAN JOHNSON (MORRIS AND JOHNSON = MOJO). DOWNLOAD NO.183 - FLOTSAM JETSAM

The Ferris brothers of Peewee, John and Stephen, are without a doubt three of Australia’s most proficient and successful DJs. They lived in Sydney and had connections to many pop groups when in their formative years. From 1984 – 1988 eldest brother Stephen Ferris fronted Flotsam Jetsam (see individual photo). They had a few bright shiny singles then the bubble burst. Flotsam Jetsam enjoyed considerable support releasing five singles, some power pop 12” remixes and an EP, touring extensively throughout the country, and supporting major overseas acts A-Ha, Queen and Simply Red and New Order. The band opened for Queen in Sydney, April 1985.

Singles:

1985 - 100% One Second Love

1985 – 115 BPM

DOWNLOAD NO.181 - CHRISTIE ALLEN

NB. This is the second posting for Christie. Use the search function at top left to locate her other music.

Christie's final album Detour had 3 singles. The album and singles have never been released on C.D. Considering she outsold most of the other people in her era it is a shame that her final work is not more widely recognised.

Last 3 Singles:

"Baby Get Away" - Mushroom (August, 1980) #38
"Switchboard" - Mushroom (November, 1980)

"Don't Put Out the Flame" - Mushroom (March, 1981) #68

I have taken the last 2 singles as mentioned above above and extended both. The first single is available elsewhere on this blog also in an extended mix.

DOWNLOAD NO.180 - JO KENNEDY

This is a critique from an American about the Oz movie “Starstruck” which was a 1982 hit by director Gillian Armstrong:

…“I only discovered this delightful Australian musical comedy Starstruck this year when I borrowed a friend’s DVD, but I was instantly obsessed by it. The soundtrack (by performers that are mostly on the amateur side) is funny and so weird that you've really got to rent (or buy) the movie and make sure you get to watch it. Of all the Australian films I've seen, this one makes me want to visit the country the most. “Monkey In Me” is one of the strangest songs on the soundtrack, performed by the fantastic Jo Kennedy who's also the star of the movie”…

In the movie clip of “Monkey In Me” which you can watch on YouTube you can just recognise a young Geoffrey Rush playing a bit part as a roadie. Geoffrey throws some young man off the stage and then runs back behind the curtain.

DOWNLOAD NO.179 - WESLEY THREE

The Wesley Three comprised of twin brothers Peter and Martin Wesley-Smith and Keith Conlon, all from Adelaide. They were a stylish, Kingston Trio-like ensemble, which attracted public attention through appearances on the national TV talent quest Showcase 1965. They recorded two albums in quick succession for CBS and enjoyed a brief burst of national folk singing success. Their hit single was “Little Tommy” which was backed by “Bound For South Australia”. The single got to #14 in South Australia in 1965. Interestingly, “Little Tommy”, written by Martin Wesley-Smith, was covered by American group The Serendipity Singers.

DOWNLOAD NO.178 - HARRY YOUNG AND SABBATH

HARRY YOUNG GOT THE CALL TO MARTIN ERDMAN'S SYDNEY STUDIOS TO PUT HIS VOCALS OVER A COMPLETED BACKING TRACK LATE ONE NIGHT IN 1970. HARRY DIDN'T KNOW THE SONG BUT AFTER A FEW ATTEMPTS OUT CAME A RATHER IMPRESSIVE VERSION OF "SAN BERNADINO" A SONG ORIGINALLY BY U.K. ARTIST JEFF CHRISTIE. WITH THE BIG RADIO BAN AT THE TIME IT WAS EASIER TO HAVE AN AUSSIE ARTIST COVER A TRACK FROM OVERSEAS...NUMEROUS AUSSIE ARTIST CAME TO PROMINENCE DURING THIS RADIO BAN PERIOD...

NOW, ALL THESE YEARS LATER, ERDMAN HAS ATTEMPTED TO RELEASE THE CD VERSION OF THIS SINGLE TWICE BUT EACH VERSION IS FULL OF RECORDING ANOMALIES AND POPS. I HAVE ASKED MARTIN A COUPLE OF TIMES TO CLEAN IT UP AND EVEN SENT HIM A COPY AFTER I WORKED ON IT. TO THIS DAY IT STILL SOUNDS AWFUL WITH CLICKS JUST ABOUT ONE SECOND APART ALL THE WAY THROUGH, YECH!!!

SO TO REDRESS THIS SITUATION I HAVE INCLUDED A COPY OF THE EXTENDED 12" TOM MIX VERSION OF "SAN BERNADINO" FOR DOWNLOAD. IT IS CLEAN AND SOUNDS WARM COMPARED TO WHAT IS AVAILABLE CURRENTLY ON CD.

DOWNLOAD NO.177 - SEBASTIAN HARDIE

Sebastian Hardie were Australia's first symphonic rock band. They were initially formed in Sydney in 1967 as Sebastian Hardie Blues Band but dropped the 'Blues Band' reference when they became pop-oriented. By 1973 they developed a more progressive rock style, and later performed as Windchase, but they disbanded by 1977. An early member of Sebastian Hardie was Jon English, who became better known after he left and starred as Judas Iscariot in the Australian version of the stage musical Jesus Christ Superstar in 1972, he subsequently had a solo career as a singer, actor and scriptwriter. A later member, Mario Millo became a multi-award winner for his television and movie music. Sebastian Hardie's other early members included Graham Ford, Peter Plavsic and his brother Alex Plavsic. After English and Ford had left, the Plavsic brothers were joined by Millo and Toivo Pilt. With their addition, Sebastian Hardie developed extended progressive rock tracks to become a symphonic rock group before they released their definitive album Four Moments in 1975, which peaked at #13 on the National albums chart. They followed with a second album Windchase in 1976, but it had less chart success. Millo and Pilt formed the band, Windchase, to release Symphinity in 1977, it was a heavier jazz-fusion album but didn't have chart success and they disbanded.

Singles

  • "All Right Now" (1973)
  • "Day After Day" (1974)
  • "Rosanna" (1975)

It has been recorded a million times over by various artists and has featured in movies and TV commercials etc.

I'm sure Midoztouch contributors K1W1 and Micko will be happy to see it make an appearance after all these years...

Many thanks to all who helped get it back out for the general public to enjoy!

DOWNLOAD NO.175 - BARRY CROCKER

Barry Hugh Crocker (born 4 November 1935 Geelong) is the Oz equivalent of the UK’s Max Bygraves but I think he is a more consummate performer. He is a stage actor, TV actor, film actor, pop singer, comedian etc and has been able to survive for numerous years in the media. He has awards for singing, performing in stage musicals, acting and TV “Logie” awards for just being a personality. Crocker also has starred alongside Barry Humphries in the title role of The Adventures of Barry McKenzie and its sequel, Barry McKenzie Holds His Own. In 1985 Barry sang the original recording of the theme song for the Australian soap opera Neighbours which was written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent the couple responsible for “Downtown” and “The Two of Us”. He started his career in 1969 with a fairly big hit "Please Don’t Go" which is a well orchestrated ballad.

HIT SINGLES:

1969 Please Don’t Go #22

1970 The Pensioner #35

DOWNLOAD NO.174 - KEITH MCGOWAN

Keith McGowan was born 1943 in Melbourne Australia. Keith was a radio presenter at various stations over the years and still works as of 2009. In 1979 he had a top ten hit with a narrative piece called "A Little Boy's Christmas Prayer" on the Fable label. It has been released as an MP3 download and can be purchased from numerous American and British internet sites - freely available if you live in those countries. For people in Oz it was on a Rajon CD which has long been out of print.

The song is a spoken piece designed to tug at the heartstrings of Christmas motorists…it’s a plea to slow down and survive the holidays….a lovely sentiment to be sure but the delivery borders on pure corn. The backing is “Silent Night”…it surfaces in places…but no matter how hard it tries Keith manages to drown it out...

The first download is from a Midoztouch contributor called "Wholives" and they have donated a link to the B-side called "Little Boy Blue":

DOWNLOAD NO.173 - BETTY MCQUADE

Betty McQuade, came from a family of Scottish entertainers. She started her career by winning a talent quest in Brisbane ca.1955. For five years Betty performed at many Brisbane venues including Cloudland, various clubs and on television shows. She also featured with Col Joye and Johnny O’Keefe at Festival Hall Brisbane. Betty went to Melbourne in 1960 singing with The Thunderbirds and after developing substantial public support, was selected by Astor Records to vanguard their new policy of signing talented Australian artists. Betty’s first recording for Astor was "Midnight Bus" in 1961, which went top-ten in most states but with considerable time lag between charting.

Midnight Bus went to #6 in 1961 in Melbourne and then gestated for 4 years. In 1965 it went to #17 in Brisbane, #39 in Melbourne and #11 in Perth.

This download is beefed up with more bass. Enjoy "Midnight Bus":

DOWNLOAD NO.171 - NORMIE ROWE

Normie Rowe began in 1964 when he was spotted performing by radio personality Stan Rofe who arranged for him to appear at Melbourne dances and discos backed by instrumental groups like The Thunderbirds, The Impostors and finally The Playboys, who became his permanent band until 1967. Signing with Brisbane-based independent label Sunshine, Rowe released his first single Gershwin's “It Ain't Necessarily So” in April 1965. Rowe recorded a number of successful ballads and pop songs throughout 1965, including Que Sera Sera” (1965), “I Who Have Nothing” (1965), “Tell Him I'm Not Home” (1965), and “Shakin' All Over” (1965), fostering his image as the epitome of the clean-cut pop idol of the mid-1960s.

In mid-1965 he joined the Easybeats, Bobby and Laurie and M.P.D. Ltd on “The Big Four” national tour playing to huge crowds around the country. In August 1966 Rowe travelled to the UK to further his career. He recorded four new singles with producers Trevor Kennedy and John Carter and toured extensively with performers such as Julie Driscoll, The Spencer Davis Group, Brian Auger and The Trinity, Gene Pitney and The Troggs. In March 1967 he toured the UK with The Playboys. Together they also toured North America in support of Roy Orbison and represented Australia at Expo '67 in Montreal.

In September 1967 Rowe received a call-up for compulsory military service. The following two years included active service in Vietnam with the A Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, which dramatically curtailed his music career. Returning to the music industry in 1970 he released “Hello” which was penned by Johnny Young. Johnny had written about five hits in a row: “The Star”, “The Real Thing”, “I Thank You”, “Smiley” and “Hello”. It was revealed many years later that Young's song "Smiley", a major hit for Ronnie Burns in 1969, was written about Normie. The “Hello” album marked the end of Normie’s Sunshine contract, although the label had been taken over by Festival several years earlier after it got into financial problems. Normie signed to Festival in 1971, and on March 6 he married his girlfriend Sue Powlesland.

As well as their own recordings, they put out recordings by other pop groups. One of those groups The Motivation hailed from NSW. They recorded 3 singles in 1968 for the Ramrod label.

DOWNLOAD NO.168 - TONY BRADY

Tony Brady began singing in the late fifties as a dance band vocalist. His main claim to fame, initially, was the fact that he looked and sounded like Frank Sinatra. In 1960, he worked with vocal group the Graduates for a five month period, during which time they toured with the Fabian Show. Then in January 1961, at the age of twenty-three, he signed with CBS Coronet Records, and released his first single “Angel In A Red And White Scarf”. The song sold moderately well. Later in the year he scored a hit with “Big Things Are Happening”. Also in the early part of 1961, he hosted a national Friday night radio show on the ABC called Mainstream For Moderns. Tony hit the charts again in March 1962, with “A Penny For Your Thoughts”. Later in the year he embarked on a tour of Asia.

Tony changed labels to RCA and went on to release more records, including “Let’s Stomp Australia Way” (written by Barry Gibb and Johnny Devlin) but over the next couple of years, further chart success eluded him. His RCA label backing group were called The Coronets. Eventually when the hits died up Tony went into management and was a promotions officer with Col Joye's agency.

Singles:

1961 “Angel In A Red And White Scarf” No.23 charted for 8 weeks.

1961 “Big Things Are Happening” No.27 charted for 7 weeks.

1962 “A Penny For Your Thoughts” No.22 charted for 9 weeks.

1962 “A Promise Of Things To Come” No.22 charted for 7 weeks.

1964 “Surf Ridin’” No.39 charted for 2 weeks.
