Forget your Justin Bieber and all those 12 year old kids having hits, it's time for us oldies to strike back with our own YouTube sensation!

"Dialling Tone" by Will Kevans is a song that deserves to be a hit in Oz. It officially comes out in June 2010 in the UK but needs a distributor here in Oz.

It sounds great and the clip is a winner. The clip is one of the most energetic and visually engaging things I've ever seen. [Make sure you hit the expand button on the YouTube clip above and watch the full screen version].

The actor breezing his way through the song is young UK star Russell Tovey who has been in numerous BBC shows since he was 13. His first TV show on air here in the early 1990s was MUD which was an afternoon kid's show on ABC TV.

If you like Russell Tovey you should check out "Being Human" his UK Sci Fi TV hit...about a vampire, ghost and werewolf that share a flat in Bristol...best comedy drama in ages...award winning in fact!

Wazza was born in Newcastle NSW (according to one of my sources) and spent most of his life at the piano. Warren played with John Konrad's Kaydets (1960) and in Johnny O'Keefe's backing band. Warren made many recordings for the Leedon label from 1961 to 1964, they are mostly in what has been described as "honky tonk" style. He went from backing and session work, to early appearances on Bandstand and Six O'Clock Rock, then to a long running gig on ABC TV Playschool as "Mr Music". His sons Darren and Mark have careers in country music nowadays. Warren's wife was also a performer.

Les Welch was a band leader in the WW2 period and racked up many number ones back in the days before top 40 charts came into existence. His repertoire included novelty, pop and jazz hits all played with his infectious swing style.

His early singles include: "And They Call It Dixieland", "Saturday Night Fish Fry", "Mule Train", "Pacific Boogie-Woogie", "I Didn't Know The Gun Was Loaded", "Get Up Offa That Floor Hannah", "That Lucky Old Sun", "Hucklebuck", "Caravan" "Lover's Gold", "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", "Music, Music, Music", "If I Knew You Were Coming", "Candy And Cake", "Grose Grobe Mama", "Rosetta", "Mona Lisa's Daughter" which was the flip of "I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine", "Les' Yancey Beat", "Count Every Star", "Hand Out Song" "Chug A Lug", "Here You Are", "The Thing", "Hold On"...This list is is just some of the more than 100 singles he released!

He was still working in the 1960s and often backed other artists. One of his 1960s hits was "A Man Called Peter" with singer Daryl Stewart. In fact, there were many artists that had top 40 hits using Mr Welch's arrangements or his band in an uncredited role.

The vinyl album here for download has never been transferred to CD. It contains a few stereo remakes that were coupled with mono original hits from the 1940s and 50s.

Jason Darnell aka Duggie Dean, was born Douglas Owen White 29th May 1935 in Hampstead London He was raised in the village of Parkend in the Forest Of Dean Gloucestershire. He had numerous low paid and menial jobs before joining the Royal Air Force after WW2. He formed a couple of troop entertainment groups before departing after 3 years service. Doug (Jason) and his then comedy and musical partner set up shop on Barry Island where he learned the ropes of theatre entertainment and slowly began performing across South Wales. He had numerous name changes as his status improved in cabaret, performing up and down the seaside circuit in England.

After touring the UK circuit Doug was asked to top the bill on the P & O Empress Cruiser, with the Eric Winstone orchestra, and it was on one of his cruises to Canada that he changed his stage name to Jason Darnell.

Cruises to Australia were Jason’s favourite – he met his future manager and producer Ian McCallum on one of these trips, and he was invited to appear on the TV show New Faces, which he won first place representing Sydney. Later on another visit to Australia he represented Melbourne, and once again won first place.

He was then engaged to perform throughout the Federal Hotel Circuit which was a major chain in Australia at the time. He gained a lot of fans and good friends on this tour, and Jason was then signed by Festival Records and released his first record for them. The song was the ballad “Love Is All” in 1973 - his recording was requested and played regularly on all the popular radio shows. The “B” side of the record was “Sail Along Silv'ry Moon” it went into some Oz charts, and was particularly popular with listening audiences in Tasmania. So popular was Jason in Tasmania, and he was so taken with the people and scenery, he left Melbourne and moved to his new home in Hobart.

After a few enjoyable years in Hobart, which included hosting his own weekly TV and Radio shows, he returned to Sydney where he appeared on all the big Saturday night Television shows. Next, Jason went onto star in various touring musical theatre groups and played the role of “Prince Charming” for more than 3 years with a travelling company that swept across Australia and New Zealand. Doug is still going strong as of 2009 and still doing cabaret.

DOWNLOAD N0.371 - MOONSHINE JUG AND STRING BAND (The Angels)

Before Doc Neeson and the Angels were charting with their high-powered Oz rock the band had much more humble beginnings. They started in Adelaide as The Moonshine Jug and String Band which played "washboard rock".

In November 1970, brothers Rick and John Brewster formed The Moonshine Jug and String Band. In 1971 the band was joined by Doc Neeson, an arts student and former Army sergeant and already a prominent figure on the Adelaide music scene. The band performed at university campuses and in 1973 released their debut E.P. "Keep You on the Move", which made the top 5 in Adelaide. This was followed in 1974 by the single "That's All Right With Me". Both these releases were on John Woodruff's Sphere label. Woodruff went on to become the band's manager for most of its career.

In 1974 they changed their name to The Keystone Angels, switched to electric instruments and began playing 1950s rock and roll on the pub circuit. On 3 August 1974, just before Go-Set magazine, a number of small ads started appearing weekly announcing "The KEYSTONE ANGELS are coming", possibly the first mention of the band in an Australian national rock music publication.

In 1975 the band supported AC/DC during a tour, and later performed as the backing band for Chuck Berry. They dropped "Keystone" from their name and became simply "The Angels". At this point the band was a four-piece with Neeson on bass guitar, Charlie King (Peter Christopolous) on drums, Rick Brewster on lead guitars and John Brewster on lead vocals and rhythm guitar.

The Angels' first single, "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again", was released in April 1976. From this point there was no stopping the band who have been in and out of the charts since.

This download is the vinyl E.P. which has four songs: "Keep You On The Move", "On The Road Again", "Tell My Friends" and "Mad Mandy" plus as a bonus the track "Keep You On The Move" taken from CD.

The TV show Aunty Jack was a creation of Grahame Bond who has always claimed that many of his ideas and skits were similar but ahead of the Monty Python team who were the UK comedy team who sang "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life".

Aunty was ably assisted by Thin Arthur aka Rory O'Donoghue who always acted as the voice of reason and prevented many a person from having their arms ripped off by Aunty.

Garry McDonald also made appearances in the show and played two memorable characters, roving reporter Norman Gunston and Kid Eager. Gunston was there at Parliament House when Gough Whitlam was sacked...one of the most memorable moments of the whole incident!

The TV show was at the forefront of comedy around the mid-1970s and is fondly remembered.

Most of their lunacy is on DVD and there is a double CD of their music called "Aunty Jack Sings Wollongong".

"Teenage Butcher" and "Doin' The Kev" came out in 1975 on the Polydor label. Both tracks are in a zip file - no password - courtesy of regular contributor Jimmy Barnes, who as you can see, has a rare signed copy of the single!

Laurel Lea, born Lorraine Lianos, was a regular Australia TV singer on shows such as Brian Henderson's "Bandstand" and Johnny O'Keefe's "Six O'clock Rock" in the late 1950s early 1960s, mostly singing cover versions of US hits. She started out with Lee Gordon on his Leedon label in 1958 (same year I was born) with a backing group called The Crescents. Laurel married fellow "Bandstand" singer Kevin Todd, and had a son Mark.

Laurel's parents owned a travelling rock 'n' roll tent show. In the 60s, she travelled with them around Australia doing rock shows in local halls, and in the mid-1970s, she joined back up with Johnny O'Keefe and a few others from the earlier rock years, appearing in clubs together in the "Good Old Days of Rock 'n' Roll" show. Laurel made several records, but had little chart success. Her biggest hit was "Treasure Of Your Love". She also had a band in the 80s called "Chockarock," which toured the pub/club circuit and played old time rock and roll. Laurel died on January 31 sadly two weeks before her son's wedding , 1992 of Leukaemia.

The reason I have placed this set of 7 songs here for download is because there is very little of Laurel's work commercially available. The songs in this zip file come from video, CD and vinyl sources...two tracks are from contributors on Midoztouch and some of the information used here is also from Midoz...three tracks are from my own CD collection...and one is from Youtube. I have processed the original sound files with "click repair" and got them all to similar volume levels etc. They are 320KB mp3 mono files.

The Canetoad CD company in Sydney NSW has more Laurel tracks for sale, if you are a fan!

Most Australians would know that The Cockroaches group are responsible for creating The Wiggles TV show and associated merchandise. The Field brothers (Paul, John and Anthony) started The Cockroaches in 1979 while still at boarding school. The Cockroaches began writing their own music and issued a string of singles on a variety of independent labels. In 1986 the band signed a deal with Regular Records and through promotion had better commercial success...

The band's first singles were:

The band's first single on Regular, "Wait Up" (September 1986), became a national Top 40 hit and #13 in Sydney.

The band's debut album, The Cockroaches (March 1987) produced three further singles, "She's The One" (January), "Some Kind of Girl" (May) and "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)" (August). The Cockroaches reached #9 on the national chart, on its way to selling over 100,000 copies and "She's the One" became the band's biggest hit when it peaked at #7 during April 1987. "Some Kind of Girl" and "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)" also made the Top 30.

Peter Mackie replaced Phil Robinson before the band recorded its second album, Fingertips. In early 1989, The Cockroaches undertook a national tour. The band's third album, Positive (June 1991), included a cover of Brenda Lee's "Here Comes The Feeling" (August), which also appeared on the soundtrack to the feature film The Crossing, however, The Cockroaches as a band concept had run its course.

In the early 90s Anthony Field studied early childhood education. He eventually started The Wiggles with Jeff Fatt, Murray Cook (guitar) and Greg Page (vocals), which became extraordinarily successful in Australia, the USA and parts of Asia in children's entertainment and early learning.

John Field [alongside Sean Sennett] joined The Honeymen. The pair released two singles "Felt Like A Kiss" and "Motorbike Of Love". John Field went on to write the musical "Evie And The Birdman" and fronts The John Field Band.

The Image music company took four T.V. themes and released them on an E.P. called "Original T.V. Themes".

The songs include two by Brian May and The A.B.C. Showband, the "Theme from Rush" and the "Theme from Seven Little Australians"....and two songs by The Bushwackers, the "Theme from Cash & Co" and the "Theme from Ben Hall".

The "Theme from Rush" by Brian May got to #7 in 1974 and the follow-up single "Theme from Upstairs Downstairs" got to #35 in 1975.

Newcastle NSW used to have a great live music scene in the previous century but nowadays you'd be hard pressed to find many local bands working live. D.V.8 is an exception. They are still going strong today while others have come and gone.

In the late 1970s when D.V.8 front man, guitarist Greg Bryce was barely out of school he formed a power trio called Meccalissa with friends Mark Middleton (bass) and Darrell Mepham (drums) which went on to play to packed audiences at the legendary Star Hotel. (Darrell is another of my distant cousins from the Hunter Valley). This was the essential line up of DV8 - an original band of hard-driving, no frills blues-rockers who released 4 charting albums and many singles during the eighties when they ruled the local live rock scene.

The D.V.8 were very popular locally but didn't make it on a national level. Their song "She Goes" was released in 1980 and is a rare collector's item.

Models are a pop/rock/dance group from Melbourne, Australia, which formed in August 1978 and went into hiatus circa 1988 and have reformed a couple of times when they feel moved to do so.

James Freud started as their vocalist in 1982, after a couple of non-charting singles with their original line-up. In time, the band crafted a slick sound and had massive hits here and in the USA. James also had a solo career in-between group success.

One of the Model’s lesser known singles “King of Kings” came out for Christmas 1985. All proceeds were donated to the Salvation Army but it only charted in NSW so it probably didn’t make too much cash. The song contains portions of the famous speech spoken by Martin Luther King, “I have a dream”.

As you can see from the pictures above the A-side had a picture of a playing card and all the recording information was on the B-side. The B-side played at 33 1/3 RPM while the A-side was at 45 RPM - a very novel feature. There are not that many 7” releases that can boast different speeds on both sides.

The original single mix was not a dance track but by adding a new rhythm section and some phasing I have created a new Tom Mix extended dance mix of "King of Kings". Enjoy!

DOWNLOAD NO.362 - GILLIES REPORT

The ABC TV network has always fostered off-the-wall Oz shows and "The Gillies Report" was one from the 1984 to 1985 period. Comedian Max Gillies did great impersonations and in this track he tackles Bob Hawke and some of the world leaders of the time. Max hails from Melbourne and still performs at times. In his later years he has given comedy away to take on many straight roles.

Max is ably assisted on "Shout" by Phil Scott. The words to "Shout" were adapted by comedian John Clark and entertainer Phil Scott. Phil often works with another partner nowadays, Jonathan Biggins, who hails from Newcastle NSW - my wife went through school with his sister Felicity Biggins who amongst others, plays piano for the touring edition of "Playschool", another ABC show.

DOWNLOAD NO.361 - THE DELLTONES

The Delltones first appeared on the scene in the 1950s with Johnny O'Keefe and such like. They made an appearance backing Johnny on his first big hit "Shout" in 1958-59.

The various configurations of group members has not changed their style and their live shows are still amazing.

Here for download is a pretty rare item "Papa Oom Mow Mow" an old rocker which was given new life in 1984.

The single version has been on CD but the little known "dance mix" has not.

The D-Generation were a bunch of smart university types that were training to be doctors and lawyers and decided to forego surgery and create comedy after appearing in their university revue...or is that the Monty Python team?? Anyway they are still enjoying life as the "Working Dogs".

Back in the 1980s the D-team put together a small comedy track called "Five In A Row" which parodied 5 Oz singing artists. A little later when the applause died down they went back and did "Five More In A Row".

All up, with both being Top 40 tracks, they made enough money to keep themselves going (just) and to keep the lawyers (real ones) from issuing them with writs on behalf of the following artists:

DOWNLOAD NO.359 - STARS OF AUSTRALIAN CLUBS

This week I went to Maitland's Sunday Market and purchased a couple of rare old vinyl albums for $4 each. When I got home and put the "Stars Of Australian Clubs" album on my old turntable I found that it was badly scratched on a few tracks, gouged beyond help....I now remember why we got rid of vinyl...

I have been able to restore 10 out of 12 of the original tracks and in the case of the 2 others I have substituted alternate items, similar in age, to the ones I couldn't rescue. The 2 songs lost were "Anne" by Reg Lindsay and "She's My Baby" by Warren Carr.

Note: The first 2 songs on side one of the album, "You're Everything" by Don Lane & "Thunderball" by Sandy Scott, have been put on this bog previously, so I have substituted alternate tracks by the same artists to create my own "Stars Of Australian Clubs Vol.2".

Tim and Debbie are characters, created by Stephen Blackburn and Mary Kenneally, who appeared on Australian television in the early 1980s in a show called Australia You're Standing In It. Tim and Debbie are left-wing pseudo-intellectuals whose world view is constructed from a confused jumble of intellectual mass culture. Tim and Debbie haven't been seen for 20 years, but their segment called Brainspace lives on in the memory of thousands of Australians.

The track for download "God Save Me" is billed as the A-side while the theme to the TV show from which it came was billed as the B-side. "Australia You're Standing In It" can be found further over on another post.

Most oldies will remember Perfect Match a Grundy TV show hosted by Greg Evans and Debbie Newsome. It was a rip-off of an American show called the Dating Game I think...?

The theme from the show Perfect Match was released by Dan and Jean (not the American duo Jan and Dean) in 1984. Although it didn't chart highly, the single was fondly remembered because it was used at various times for pub and dance hall competitions and such...

Debbie newsome had a Top 40 hit of her own called "What's Your Name, What's Your Number" in 1979.

Rick Turk was the producer of the original "Percect Match" single. The 2:40 min single mix had a longer disco mix on the flipside which is what I have here for download.

I have no accurate information on this song except what is gleened from the label. The singer Bebop is Brendan Hanley who lives in Byron Bay NSW and nowadays goes by the name of Mook Hanley. It was issued in 1980.

On listening, you will find that this song is funny in places and should have appealed to many at the time because it made fun of rich folk like Kerry Packer, Rupert Murdoch and their ilk...

The title "Ocker Don't Knock'er" refers to habit of us self-depricating Ozzies always putting Australia down.

Johnny Devlin, born John Lockett Devlin (11 May 1938), was an influential early NZ rock musician, sometimes called "New Zealand’s answer to Elvis Presley".

The labels shown above are for the same song issued a year appart on the flipside of two different A-side songs. "I Can't Go, I Can't Stay" on the ATA issue had "Hearbreak Hotel" on the A-side and the RCA version was issued as the flipside of "Panel Van".

This song has not been issued on CD although much of Johnny's other work has. It is a bluesy rock track which sounds like a progressive Oz number from circa 1971 and could have been probably issued then as a Top 40 single in its own right.

Galapagos Duck were mostly an ensemble that played and created jazz. But when given the job of making a theme song for the 1987 America's Cup Challenge they certainly put a lot of effort into making a mainsteam pop jingle.

Superduck was an expanded line-up of the original Galapagos members. Barry Leaf did the lead vocals on this track "Challenge '87".

Rim D. Paul was a NZ lounge singer who was inspired to write a ballad about the victorious title fight of Oz boxer Lionel Rose over Japan's Fighting Harada.

Rim borrowed a known Japanese tune - Kyu Sakamoto's "Sukiyaki" - wrote new words and with the James Wright Band backing him, he recorded "The Ballad Of Lionel Rose" which got to #11 nationally. This was Rim's only charting Oz single. The overdubbed radio call of the fight was from an uncredited Ron Casey.

Lionel Rose started as a boxer but became a recording artist and had a number one hit in the 1970s with a track called "I Thank You" (found elsewhere on this blog).

The Matchinations were an Oz band from the 1980s and have many songs to their credit but their record company have not issued many on CD.

Notable national hits included "Pressure Sway", "My Heart's On Fire" and "No Say In It". They also achieved indie prominence with the two versions of their first single, "Average Inadequacy".

The Machinations failed to achieve as much commercial success, either at home or abroad, as many of their peers. Nevertheless, the band had a cult following in dance clubs, by far their strongest supporters. In the old days when I was a mobile disc jokey they were a very popular club/pub dance band here in Newcastle. In my vinyl collection I have most of their 12" remixes but sadly only 2 of these have ever been issued on CD (in Germany).

Some of the early singles were produced by Lobby Loyde.

Allan Caswell an Oz songwriter and story teller has had a number of hits under his own name and has written hits for others.

"G'day" was one of Caswell's cute kid songs that was released by Oz bushband Bullamakanka in 1984 then later released by Sir Les Patterson (Barry Humphreys) in 1987.

The Les Patterson single had a pretty mundane version on the AA-side but for this download I have provided the A-side mix known as the "club version". Barry has other songs on this blog. Please use the search facility to locate them.

The structure of both songs is vastly different but they each have a certain charm...or in the case of Mr. Patterson's club version a certain lack of charm...

The rectangular blurb above (click to read larger print version) has most of the recording information but it is noteworthy that backing vocals were by Lynda George. Is this really meant to be Miss "Linda" George?

Digby George Richards was born on 12th September 1941. His father, Gordon was a tough, mounted policeman and the family was then stationed in Dunedoo, in far-west New South Wales. When Digby was about five, the Richards family, now including another son, Doug, moved to Narooma, where he started, and finished, school. Doug was rummaging through the back shed of the family home and found an old guitar. He learned to play it, and encouraged Dig to do likewise. Upon finishing school, Dig packed his bags for Sydney and started work as a junior manager at Walton’s department store in the inner-city.

Jon Hayton, already an accomplished guitar player, was in a music store, and happened upon Dig strumming a guitar, and mumbling through a song. Jon was instantly attracted to Dig's rockabilly style and good looks, and asked him to sing lead vocals in his band, the Red Jeans. The name slowly morphed from Red Jeans to R’Jays. With primitive electric instruments and sound equipment - their bass player played tea chest bass - they played their first dance in August 1958. Dig Richards and the R'Jays stood out from the crowd. More importantly they caught the eye of John Laws radio announcer. Early in 1959, after some line-up changes and now boasting an electric bass guitarist, the group approached Festival Records for an audition.

They were granted an audition. The group performed their entire repertoire but failed to make the desired impression. As a last resort Dig began singing a song his 15 year old brother Doug had partly written. Ken Taylor liked it enough for 'I Wanna Love You' to be released as Dig Richard's first single in July, backed by 'Kansas City'. The R'Jays in the meantime became Festival's house band.

Dig Richards and the R'Jays were the first group to play live on Brian Henderson's Bandstand, and became regulars on both Bandstand and the Johnny O'Keefe compared 'Six O’clock Rock'. By August 1959 he had his own TV show, 'Teentime' on the 7 Network, broadcast live to air for the next two years, as in concert Richards and group joined Lee Gordon's Big Shows, alongside Crash Craddock, Lloyd Price and Rick Nelson.

Richards and the R'Jays parted company in 1962. In 1964 the R'Jays became the Rajahs. Dig Richards had continued his solo recording career. Keen on becoming an all-round performer, he learned to play the guitar finger-style and took vocal lessons at Sydney's Conservatorium Of Music. In 1963 he made his debut as an adult entertainer at Sydney's Spellsons nightclub. In 1964 he compared his own TV show, 'Dig Richards' Ampol Show' By now he had shifted musical emphasis to slower, country-ish material, developing his own song writing. As well as playing nightclubs and RSLs he toured South East Asia.

Digby Richards continued to record and perform throughout the 70s, with a new record contract with RCA, technically making him label-mates with Elvis and Johnny Cash. Dig began looking and dressing like a younger man than he had in his twenties, growing his hair, as was the style de jour, and in retrospect began to look like a young and un-silver Charlie Rich.

In 1970 he travelled to England and spent a year there writing songs, coming back to record his first album in Australia: Harlequin, in 1972. The album was received to great acclaim, and produced the hit A Little Piece Of Peace, his first song to chart since Raincoat In The River in 1963.

He was heading in the direction that he would head-in for the rest of his life. Writing beautiful, meaningful lyrics, and developing a country/rock sound.

By mid-1982, Dig had been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, and was given six months to live. According to Leon Isackson, he took it in his stride, and accepted with grace and dignity his fate. Receiving treatment at North Shore hospital, in Sydney, his friends rallied around, but watched him growing sicker by the day.

In early 1983, a tribute concert was organised. Col Joye, the R'Jays, his brother Doug Richards and a host of others paid a musical tribute to him. By all indications it was a celebration not a service with mourning.

On February 28 1983, the word lost Dig. His death came as a sad loss to Australian rock'n'roll fans, and the industry...

Noel Crombie (born Geoffrey Noel Crombie 17th April 1953 in Wellington NZ) was a member of the band Split Enz. He mostly designed backdrops and costumes for their shows and worked behind the scenes as well as on stage as their drummer and percussionist.

Noel Crombie has released one solo single, "My Voice Keeps Changing On Me", in 1983 while Split Enz took a break.

After the Enz split mid-1980s, Noel formed the band Schnell Fenster with Phil Judd, Eddie Rayner and Nigel Griggs, ex-members of Split Enz, and Michael den Elzen. [Schnell Fenster have a song on this blog. Please use the search facility to locate it].

In 1988 Noel formed a group called Noel’s Cowards who put together the sound track to the movie Rikky and Pete.

In 1996, Crombie assisted Crowded House by designing the stage set design for their final concert, Farewell to the World at the Sydney Opera House.

Crombie designed the original set for ABC-TV's musical quiz program Spicks and Specks.

There is a Raven label CD called Other Enz which has the track "My Voice Keeps Changing On Me" but as usual what is purported to be the 7” version is actually not, but an alternate version with a different beginning.

The Allniters were a happy ensemble of Ska and Reggae players who came from Sydney NSW. They had a few hits throughout the 1980s. One of their biggest (#16 nationally) was a 1980's take on the old 1970 Bobby Bloom song "Montego Bay".

The sound they had was hard to capture in the recording studio. "Montego Bay" sounded much brassier done live.

Samantha Sang (born Cheryl Gray, 5 August 1953 Melbourne) was friends with the fledgling Bee Gees. She and Barry Gibb had met a number of times on TV pop shows. Samantha had been singing since the age of 15 and had already had a hit by the time she was 19.

Independently of each other, Samantha and the Bee Gees headed off to England in the late 1960s to pursue music opportunities and while Samantha was away she worked as a support act for a number of big UK artists as well as the Bee Gees.

While in the UK she was invited by the Gibbs to do some backing vocals and Barry decided to give her a crack at a solo single where Barry backed her.

"The Love Of A Woman" was the resultant track. It was written by Barry Gibb and produced by him as far as I know.

It was ignored by Oz radio stations but got into the Top 40 in NZ and parts of Europe. It was #4 hit in some parts of England and Holland.

Later in the 1970s Samantha did a remake version which is available on her greatest hits CD. The original single version has not been released on CD in Oz as far as I know.

In Europe it was released on Parlophone. In the USA it was released on Atco. In some other parts of the world it was on Polydor.

The version here for download was sent to me by Richard B. from NZ who asked me to clean up his very worn but much loved recording...

Ricky and Tammy were two good-looking, beach-going, blonde Oz singers who worked for the Sunshine label in the 1960s and then moved to the Fable label in the 1970s.

They appeared on Bandstand and other shows of the era as pop singers but in their later career they concentrated on singing two types of music: country and western!

Their first single presented for download has the backing of the group known as The Blue Jays who were Tony Worsley’s backing band. This backing group are also known as The Fabulous Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays had their own successful singles and they have a number of singles issued where they acted as the house band for the Sunshine label. Sunshine was a subsidiary of Festival.

Real Life came from Melbourne and hit the big time with their debut single “Send Me An Angel” in 1983. They had numerous charting singles around the world and sold well in foreign lands. Some of their 1984 remixes have not yet made it to CD.

Maryanne Davidson is the daughter of Frankie Davidson. Frankie wrote this track for his daughter in the 1980s.

Clayton Davis is technically not an Oz artist but everyone else on the record is.

Billy Thorpe's song is a demo restored from a cassette.

Pam Burridge, surfing superstar, is the lead singer of Pam and The Pashions.

Angela Pepper went to school with my wife at Newcastle Girl's High. Her first group was called "The Hereafter" and they won a local talent show. After finishing school she went to Sydney and got a job as the vocalist for a punk band called "The Passengers". They had a single out called "Face With No Name". She married Radio Birdman co-founder Deniz Tek and they worked together in the Angie Pepper Band with a young Clyde Bramley who went into the Hoodoo Gurus and a former Saints' drummer, Ivor Hay. Their single "Frozen World" was recorded in 1984 - her work from both bands has been issued on a Citadel CD in 2001 called "It's Just That I Miss You".

Chullora Junction's track "3801" is about the steam train that used to go through Newcastle to Sydney.

Allan Caswell has written some very cute and funny songs over the years, one being "G'day" which is used in most primary schools as your typical Oz song for greeting foreigners. "The Australia's Cup" is a humourous look at the yachting fraternity.

Peter Wells passed away in 2006. He was a member of the groups Buffalo and Rose Tattoo to name a few. He was an excellent slide guitarist.

Gaetano Scollo played "Albie Wilde". The Dayglos were Fiona Corke "Gail", Nick Carrafa "Tony" and Annie Jones "Jane". The flip side of this record has a "Midnight Mix" version.

Colin Cook had numerous hits in the 1960s. But this 1980s rocker got ignored. The flip side has an extended version of the track called "Be Bop & Blue Suede Shoes".

The Adrian Campbell song "Listen To The Radio" is a Peter Best number.

The D Generation and Tim & Debbie tracks are TV themes.

Vixen was a loud all girl Oz group recorded by Festival records, not to be confused with another group from America.

XL Capris had a goodly sized Sydney hit with "WW3" but none of their other 4 single charted.

Johnny Devlin's track "Panel Van" is on RCA and as we all know RCA have closed their vaults to many old Oz tracks. The flip side is called "I Can't Go - I Can't Stay" and was issued as the b-side on an ATA single called "Heartbreak Hotel". It is the exact same recording so does this mean ATA and RCA own an identical song?

In 1973 they were Stillwater, by 1974 they were Finch and they had a moderate career in Oz, then they changed their name to Contraband in 1978 when they went off to conquer America. They folded in 1979. Mark Evans who was bass player in this band was one of the original members of AC/DC 1975-77. Mark came from Melbourne. Newcastle's Dave Evans was also a founding member of AC/DC and is not a relation.

This year to celebrate Australia Day I am posting an old Oz pop anthem.

In 1984 GANGgajang hit the top 40 with a track called "Sounds Of Then (This Is Australia)". It has gone on to be used on a number of occasions at important ceremonies and functions and is a perennial Oz favourite. I think the group should have called the track "This Is Australia" as nobody actually remembers it by its proper title...when it was first released it was just called "Sounds Of Then" without the bracketed after part.

There has never been an official 12" of the song but various mixes of the single were issued. By combining these various alternate mixes I have made a new 8 minute mix. All the alternate mixes were from CD so the quality of my new mix is amazingly good. My new version is called: "This Is Australia (Sounds Of Then Ext Tom Mix)"

The Dee Jays were an early 1960's backing group that mostly worked for Festival records, Lee Gordon or Johnny O'Keefe. They started work with Johnny O'Keefe in 1958 (same year I was born) and can be heard backing many of Johnny's early hits.

Some of the Dee Jay's instrumental work has made it to CD, on a release called "Brian Henderson's Band Stand" but it has been out of print ever since the multinationals took over the Festival vaults...the singles "Twistin' Drums" and "Hoots, Mon" are found on this CD.

In late 1961 they put out a double sided record called "Off Shore" backed by "Toy Balloons", a song which had previously been a hit in some parts of the world for Russ Conway. As usual the radio stations ended up playing the b-side and in January 1962 it charted really well in Sydney where it got to #28.

Daniel Johns (senior) was a country rock folk singer who put out an album and a single back in 1977 on the Homespun label. Most people would know Daniel Johns (junior) the lead singer of Newcastle's successful pop band Silvercahir. Daniel (junior) has also gone solo on a few projects.

For those who don't know what the difference is between the "album version" and "single mix" of a song I have included 2 different mp3 files in a zip for your comparison. The 2 versions of "Steel City Song" sound very different but come from the same recording session, it is amazing what a studio producer and engineer can achieve from the same raw material.

With both Johns men having a strong connection to Newcastle I expected "Steel City Song" to be about my hometown of Newcastle but no, this song is about Wollongong.

Recently, on another Oz music forum called Midoztouch, a note was posted saying that we here in Oz had very few 12" mixes made during the 1970s...I agree that we had few, but in the good old days we did have some extended mixes of songs posted on 7" singles before the vinyl presses and machines were shipped to Oz to make the longer 12" records.

Here is one such example, Donnie Sutherland had the longer disco version of his track "Dancin' Man" placed on the back of the regular 7". The a-side is short about 3.30 mins but the flip is 5:38 mins.

An issue I faced when ripping this track was that the longer b-side version was almost half the volume of the a-side. This was often the case when longer songs were issued on vinyl 7" singles, when songs were half-volume they took up less space in the grooves of the record....this is why when you listen to old K-Tel albums you notice that the volumes are softer (compressed), so as to get ten songs on each side of their albums.

Tony Hatch, who wrote so many songs with his then wife Jackie Trent, was responsible for "Dancin' Man (Disco Version)" not only did he write it but was the record producer as well.

This is a big zip file of great tunes most of which have not made it to CD. I have not published whole albums on a regular basis but this one is full of many obscure tracks.

For the avid collector of Col Joye this may be the first time his version of "Honey" has appeared since the 1970s. Some of the others too, are lost gems.

Why American singer Neil Sedaka's, "Wheeling West Virginia" was included, I'll never know! Yes, I know it was recorded in Oz but he is not from hereabouts! Luckily it is added though, as it it the first time I've been able to get a copy of the original mono single mix which has not been on CD to date.

Stephen Donald Cummings (born 13 September 1954 Melbourne) is an Australian singing legend and in his spare time he writes novels.

Stephen hit his straps in 1976 working as vocalist for the Oz group The Sports but before then he was in the Pelaco Brothers formed in 1974.

His solo career started with 4 charting singles and then he slowly became less interested in top 40 hits and spent more time crafting his own style.

The Dugites, a Perth band named after a nasty little snake (the hissing kind) that is found in Western Australia, had a very good chart run with very catchy synth driven pop hits.

All their hits have been released on a commercial CD but the majority of tracks on the CD were mastered from vinyl pressings. The company responsible for their recordings "Deluxe" is nowadays defunct.

Joe Camilleri is an icon of Australian music and without doubt one of Melbourne’s finest musical exports. You might know him as Jo Jo Zep, Joey Vincent, Camo, The Maltese Falcon or simply as Joe.

Joe’s incredible 45 year career has enjoyed two chart topping highlights; The Falcons with hits including “Hit & Run”, “Shape I’m In”, “Puppet On A String” and "Taxi Mary" and The Black Sorrows with “Chained To The Wheel”, “Harley & Rose”, “Hold On To Me” and a string of others.

Oz singer, Trevor Spry, only ever recorded under his first name of "Trevor". He was a teenager when he first took an interest in music and by 1970 he achieved his first top 40 hit with "Crying In The Rain" which got to #27 nationally.

Trevor worked as a rock journalist and appeared on TV shows like Melbourne's "Uptight" and "Happening '70".

Buoyed by the sales of his first hit he released "Love Is All Around" in 1971 and it only charted in Melbourne where it got to #32 - it pretty much sank without a ripple in the rest of Oz.

The single "Crying In The Rain" was later released on an album called "Super Sounds Of Happening ’71" which is where this download comes from.

This track is one I fixed up for Alan Katzmann and his audiophile friends who are collecting all the charting top 40 hits heard on Sydney radio station 2UE from 1956 to 1974.

Candice Tan was born in Newcastle NSW and although she is currently in high school, she is making a reputation for herself singing Blues and Jazz.

She has a very melodic voice but can certainly belt out some big notes when she needs to. She regularly performs live and and has gigs at Stockton Bowling Club as well as other venues around Newcastle.

Candice has allowed me to share "And I'm Telling You, I'm Not Going" which was one of the tracks from her first CD. She was about age 15 when she recorded this one.

Formed as The New World Trio in the late 60's in Brisbane, Australia, and armed with a recording contract with Albert Productions, John Kane, John Lee, and Mel Noonan first hit the local Top 40 charts at the end of 1968/start of 1969, with their version of “Try To Remember (The Kind Of September)”. Their first single "Feed The Birds" released in 1968 had failed to chart.

In early 1971 they went to England and began working the club circuit. This led to an appearance on the UK talent quest show Opportunity Knocks where they became popular winners. Sadly, later they were tried at the Old Bailey for trying to fix the outcome of the show on which they appeared but it was never proven. They allegedly asked friends to send in bogus votes.

The trio, now billed simply as New World, signed with producer Mickie Most to his fledgling RAK Records label. In 1971 they released a version of the Joe South song Rose Garden, beating the Lynn Anderson international hit version in the UK.

In the early seventies New World were regular guests on the BBC TV show The Two Ronnies, and it is clear they were being pitched at more than just teeny-boppers. Sophisticated pop is an oxymoron, but Mickie Most was a shameless promoter who'd try anything to get his acts into the public's eye!

Their first big breakthrough in Oz was the 1971 single “Tom Tom Turnaround” - originally penned by Chinn and Chapman for the UK group The Sweet.

New World’s next single was "Kara Kara"/"Lord Of The Dance" in late 1971 which got to #19 in Oz. In some places the b-side charted well and in fact in my part of Oz at the time (Northcoast NSW), the other side wasn't given much airplay at all.

In May 1972 they released their biggest selling record, "Sister Jane", which was a Top 10 hit in Britain and Australia.

The next single flopped in the UK, it was the original version of Chinn and Chapman's "Living Next Door To Alice" - although it did make the charts in Oz, reaching #13 in March 1973.

Their next release, Chinn and Chapman’s "Rooftop Singing" just missed out on the UK Top 50, only getting as high as #51 but in Oz it was #34 in 1973.

The hits dried up for a while. It was not until 4 years later they scored a Top 40 hit with "Homemade Sunshine". In the interim they had become regular performers on TV shows. .

The legendary Oz rock group The Master's Apprentices have everything released on CD and there is very little left to find or collect for the avid/rabid fan...

So, I thought I would start 2010 with a new extended mix of the old stereo album version of "Turn Up Your Radio" which has left-right interplay that you can't discern in the mono single mix....I consider the opening of this track as one of the most recognisable Oz riffs ever recorded.

Judy Stone was born 1st January 1942. She is an Australian pop singer from Granville Sydney, who came to national prominence in the early 1960s through her regular TV appearances on the pop music show Brian Henderson's Bandstand and her many hit records. As a young performer she sang country music and was billed as The Cowgirl from Granville.

Since the Bandstand days, she has appeared on every major T.V. show in Australia and demand for her appearances has remained constant. Such is her popularity, that Judy has been invited to perform with many international artists on their Australian tours. She also appeared on the very successful Long Way To The Top tour which featured her old pals Col Joye and Little Pattie.

Judy’s early hits from the 1960s appear on a triple CD released by Festival/Spin called 4,003,221 Tears From Now.

The song that gained Judy a National Award in 1974, "Would You Lay With Me In A Field of Stone", coupled with "Mare, Mare, Mare", earned Judy the distinction of being the first Australian female entertainer to have two records concurrently in the Top 40.

In 1976, "Silver Wings and Golden Rings" firmly established Judy in the country pop scene and her cover version of "Hasta Mana" confirmed her popularity, with her version outselling the competing Abba original.

Her last hits are rarely released on CD as Judy changed from Festival to Polydor after 1971. Thankfully, the Oz branch of the Reader’s Digest Company have released most of her later work on CD.

The Mixtures were aptly named. Their decade-long career included some very notable successes, including major Australian and international hits, but the group really never developed a consistent musical style or image and, like so many of their Oz contemporaries, the group was subject to repeated line-up changes in its later years. Beginning as one of many 'beat' acts slogging it out on the Melbourne scene in the mid-60s, they gradually gained national prominence over the next few years. In 1970, with a completely different line-up, The Mixtures scored two successive #1 Australian singles. By the time they split in 1976 The Mixtures' personnel list had changed several more times - as had their musical style - and their short-lived fame had passed.

Taste consisted of Ken Murdoch, Virgil Donati, Michael Tortoni and Joey Amenta. They were a major force in Australia’s rock world in the late 70s. Taste was dubbed Australia’s answer to UK group Queen, and after two albums they really looked like taking the next step to bigger and better things. The sound they produced was solid rock. The other pop groups at the time were singing about teen parties and girls but Taste went in their own direction with more sophisticated lyrics. They produced 2 albums: Tickle Your Fancy and Knights Of Love.

The reason I did it like this is because the mp3 versions currently available on other blog sites have flaws towards the end and when played loud are very noticeable. One of their 1974 hits "Walking" has been released on CD. It has appeared on a Hush Greatest Hits CD and on various artist CD compilations but most of the time compilers get the wrong version issued.

Here for download are 2 versions of "Walking" in a zip file. One is the 7" single version and one is the album version. They were recorded at different sessions and don't have the same production values. The 7" single mix is very polished and the album version sounds almost like a live recording.

S.C.R.A. (Southern Contemporary Rock Assembly) have other songs on this blog. Please use search facility to locate them.

S.C.R.A. had the bristling Top 10 hit "Roly Poly" in early 1972 and then went quiet for a while. They bounced back with "Our Ship" in late 1972 and by this time had changed from M-7 records to Atlantic. This single was more jazz influenced than the rollicking big band sound they had established.

Their first single "C.C.Rider" (also on this blog) was a rock track and this song bore no resemblance to their "Roly Poly" era. Maybe because they tried so many styles the radio DJs couldn't put them into a particular niche for selling to the public.

"Dance You Fool, Dance" came out in 1979 as the b-side of the single of "Ooh Child" - a lovely song which listeners were not into at the time of release. Radio DJs turned it over and played "Dance You Fool, Dance"as it was more accessible for the average punter and showed off Marcia's dynamic range and vocal capabilities. It got to #46 nationally and sold well in Adelaide. In 1980 the "Ooh Child" / "Dance You Fool, Dance" single was released in the UK (see label above).

Marcia Hines, was sharing the credits with a singing couple she was trying to help crack the local market - Terry Young and Monalisa. They eventually had singles released under their own names.

The single edit of "Dance You Fool, Dance" has not been issued on CD, only the longer album cut.

Sherbet had a big pop career spanning many years. Their singles were glossy and well produced. One of the 1974 singles, "So Glad You're Mine", has been ignored by the compilers as the original single version hasn't yet been issued on CD.

There were 3 versions made: One was the original album version running 3:35 mins which shows up on CDs all the time - strangely, it was not issued on a vinyl album for some time after another re-make version was issued. There was an edited mix of the first version called the single mix running 2:49 mins (shown above) and the third one was a new re-make which was issued on their next vinyl album.

According to notes from the Sherbet CD anthology the group were not happy with the first version as Darryl had a bad cold and hit a few raw notes...so they did the re-make to remedy this situation. It confused the buying public as the next album they issued didn't have the single version on it.

I always liked the first version, warts and all, as it sounds more immediate and catchy.

Dave teamed up with Autumn in the early 1970s and had a hit with "She Works In A Woman's Way". The song "Midnight Special" is the flip side of this single. "Midnight Special" co-charted with the a-side in some places. It was recorded live at Chequers Nightclub in Sydney. The single was produced by legendary Barrie McAskill. The 7" single mix is slightly different to the version released on the album "Song To Raymondo" which was released under Autumn's name.

Clarence Lancelot "Buster" Noble (b:1913 - d:1990) is an Oz legend. He was a singer, dancer, comedian and radio star from the 1940s to the 1970s. Buster was an all rounder.

He married entertainer Helen De Paul in 1941. They had two daughters Amanda Noble and Patricia Ann Ruth Noble aka Patsy Ann Noble aka Tricia Noble, who was a TV star and singer. After WW2 the Nobles joined the Tivoli circuit of variety entertainment and worked around Australia and New Zealand in such shows as Stars and Garters, Atomic Blondes, Sit Back and Laugh and Let's Make it a Party. Helen was a singer/dancer and straight woman and "Buster" the comic who played the ukelele and tap-danced. Buster also entertained Australian troops overseas and de Paul went with him to Korea in the early 1950s.

After returning to Oz, Helen worked on early TV shows and was responsible for choreographing the Vegemite commercials of the 1950s which celebrated their 50th anniversary recently and are still shown on TV in a colourised format.

"Buster" had a lot of novelty singles released over the years and one of his better known ones "The Pommy Jackaroo" from 1962 has only been on CD once to my knowledge which is frustratingly sad for fans as it was deleted long ago. One of his other hits was "The Young Camp Stockman" from 1973.

In 1968 Marcie and the Cookie released a single which had a rocking version of "White Christmas" backed with "You Were On My Mind". The song got to #23 in December 1968 - January 1969 in Brisbane Queensland and was slightly less successful in other states.

The song sounds like they used music pioneer Phil Spector's "wall of sound" technique. It is a great version and cleaned up really well for this download.

A big hit in 1963 by Oz crooner Darryl Stewart was "I Watch The Surf" which got to #34 nationally. It was originally an instrumental called "Surfside" (click to see 1963 newspaper article at right).

The original track was written by Johnny Devlin and Nat Kipner (father of Steve). The lyrics were worked by Sydney radio announcer Graham Webb.

The song was later issued on an E.P. and has occasionally popped up on surf albums but has not to my knowledge been on CD.

Oz band Cattletruck from Melbourne had a short pop career and produced a number of singles but none did as well as "Resurrection Shuffle" in 1988.

This track was originally done by UK group Ashton, Gardner and Dyke in the early 1970s and was a #16 hit in many parts of Oz. In the early 1980s the song was released again on RCA records as a 12" mix by Tony Ashton and Linda Hayes and was given a 6 minute make-over...at roughly the same time other international bands had cover versions competing for chart action.

Late in Nov 1987 Oz band Cattletruck put out various versions of the song which got to #33 nationally. All were at varying lengths and given different names: "Resurrection Shuffle" (Marty Party Mix), "Resurrection Shuffle" (Double Shuffle Mix), "Resurrection Shuffle" (Album Mix) and "Resurrection Shuffle" (Single Mix).

Darryl Cotton (born 4 September 1949 in Adelaide, Australia) is an Australian pop singer, television presenter and actor. Cotton is best known as a founding member of Australian rock group Zoot in 1968, along with Beeb Birtles, Rick Brewer and, later, Rick Springfield. He was a member of the short-lived Oz band “Frieze” which he founded with Beeb Birtles. 1n 1973 his friend Steve Kipner got him work in American firstly in the group “Friends” and then by 1975, “Cotton, Lloyd and Christian”. Michael Lloyd was in an American pop group called “West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band”, for Michael Lloyd it was only the beginning of an extraordinarily successful musical career which has, to date, netted him over one hundred gold and platinum records. After becoming the Vice President of A & R at MGM records, aged 20, in the fall of 1969, Michael achieved his first major hit producing Lou Rawls' single 'A Natural Man', winning himself a Grammy in the process. After forming his own band Friends, along with two Australians Darryl Cotton (ex-Zoot and Oz rock band) and Steve Kipner (ex-Tin Tin), Michael recorded an LP in 1973 only to see it pulled by MGM when he and Mike Curb left the label. As 'Friends', they produced a few singles including 'Gonna Have A Good Time' and 'Would You Laugh?' The album was considered to be soft pop rock, and had a lot going on for it as far as production, vocals, and instruments. Unperturbed he went on to record two further albums under the guise of Cotton, Lloyd and Christian. However, he soon discovered that his strength lay in producing and composing for others, most notably those toothsome Mormon siblings the Osmonds (including their 'experimental' 'Crazy Horses' period and Donny's solo career), as well as other teen heart-throbs like Shaun Cassidy and Leif Garrett. His greatest achievement in commercial terms came with the 1987 film 'Dirty Dancing', for which he acted as musical supervisor as well as producing and co-writing much of the music.

Chris Christian (born on February 7, 1955 Texas) is a songwriter, record producer, and a record label executive. He recorded as a member of the trio of Cotton, Lloyd and Christian which had a couple of hits on 20th Century Records. Christian also played guitar in the Chet Atkins band.

Jane Clifton was born 1949 in Gibraltar and moved to Perth WA where she was able to make a transition into the music business by 1965. In the late 1970s she fronted a pop group called Stiletto. Stiletto were an "alternative / pseudo feminist" band who clawed their way onto Countdown according to Jane. The band lasted from 1976 to 1978. Her biggest single with Stiletto was called "Bluebirds".

Jane continued to make headway in music as a solo artist until she got a #13 national hit single with "Girl On The Wall" in 1984.

Jane has not only been a singer but she has also done TV, appeared on stage and written books. She regularly does public speaking and radio. She is an all-rounder.

"The Ballad Of Lady Di" charted in Sydney NSW in May 1981. It seems to have flopped in the rest of Oz but it was released in England and sold moderately well. The English release came out on the Stiff label with a picture cover (see above). It was given much radio airplay at the time.

The Hon. Nic Jones and Ian MacRae, were radio announcers in Sydney, which probably explains why it rose to prominence there. By the time the song departed from the top 40 both men had gone to England to report on Charles and Di's wedding. Ian MacRae had UK connections as he had been one of the Oz radio personalities who worked in England during the days of the pirate radio ships which anchored outside British waters.

The flip-side was called "Three Minutes Of Silence". Contrary to what you might think, it was actually six minutes of comedy about being quiet for three minutes.

Martin Erdman was the producer on one of the biggest selling songs to come from Oz. The artist, Sister Janet Mead, was a Sister of Mercy nun who first scored a #2 hit in Oz which then sold millions all around the world. In Oz, its chart run started in late 1973 and it was still selling mid 1974.

In 1974 the disco craze was just beginning as the glam rock scene was fading. The backing on the single of "The Lord's Prayer" is almost disco and has a very strong rhythm section.

DOWNLOAD NO.307 - THE ORMSBY BROTHERS

The Ormsby Brothers shot to the top of the charts with their first single then slowly faded with less successful follow-ups. Their sound was almost like the USA Osmond Brothers who were enjoying world-wide success at the time.

Music producer Peter Dawkins was on a roll in the early 1970s with many top 40 hits to his credit but interestingly, none made it as high on the national charts, as a glossy remake of the old Lesley Gore hit “You Don’t Own Me” by Sydney sibling act The Ormsby Brothers, which peaked at #5. Peter said he looked back on that single, engineered by former Beatles studio assistant and later Sherbet producer Richard Lush, as the best of his early Australian productions.

The chart run for the Ormsby Brothers was not long but they made some very glossy pop while it lasted.

Depending on which charts you read the single “You Don’t Own Me” was either the second or fourth highest selling Oz single in 1973. Poor old Dame Edna was born as Edna May Beazley in the rural city of Wagga Wagga, and started her stage career on 19 December 1955 as Mrs. Norm Everage, an "average Australian housewife" who by then was living in Moonee Ponds Victoria.

Edna has tried many times to break into international show business and has had numerous guest roles on inconsequential TV shows but still isn't as famous as she should be. It was nice that the Royal Family allowed her to keep her title after Norm died but honestly it's the only thing that has given her any clout...the Americans are probably more impressed than we are...

In the late 1980s she tried to not only cash in on everything Australian for the Bicentennial but she downright stole the limelight from one of our Oz TV exports - Neighbours! Edna got Tony Hatch's theme song and did a 7" single mix and a 12" "Caring And Sharing" mix. Even with all the payola behind it, it didn't make it to the top 40 anywhere in the world.

Austen Tayshus (real name Sandy Gutman born March 17, 1954) is an Australian-Jewish comedian. His stage name is a play on words of "ostentatious", meaning "over-the-top".

Austen Tayshus had a major comedy breakthrough with his 1983 hit "Australiana" then slowly faded away with less successful follow-ups.

"Phantom Shuffle" from 1984 was one of the few singles that also got a 12" mix. It was not much different to the single version both going about 5 mins in length.

Ray Burton had a career in Oz then went to America and while there cut an album. He came back to Oz and cut his second album which contained the song here for download...

Here is some info from Ray's MySpace site..."I cut an album of my all my own songs for Paramount Records in the US entitled STRIVE, SEEK AND FIND voted on release as the best album on the American National FM radio charts. Back in Australia after 9 years in the US I recorded a solo album for WARNER BROS entitled Dreamers & Nightflyers using the famous Australian band CROSSFIRE. This album remains one of the most respected musical albums of the time in Australia producing two national hit songs TOO HARD TO HANDLE and PADDINGTON GREEN".

"Too Hard To Handle" got to #40 nationally in March 1978. The record was released in 1977. Produced by the now famous Charles Fisher.

The Proclaimers were an Oz group from the early 1970s. They started in Melbourne and their lead singer was Johnathan Sommers.

I don't know what happened to the Oz group but they had a few Christian music singles and then folded after 1974.

The song "Jesus Christ, What A Man" is a country ballad with nice slide guitar work. It came out in 1971 on the Fable label. It got to #47 nationally.

The follow-up singles were: "One More Mountain To Climb" in 1972 which got to #32 nationally, and a rather hard to find single called "All His Children" which got to #17 nationally in 1972, but was co-charting with 2 other versions: one by Oz singer Vic Christopher and the other by American singer Charlie Pride.

Their greatest hits CD "Wings Of A Dove" is available as of 2007 on the Fable label but it is missing one of their later singles, "All His Children"...

If you know of or have a copy of the song "All His Children" please let me know so I can send a copy to the folks at Ozburn as it they are searching for it?
